TENICA: The Work Behind the Mission

TENICA: The Work Behind the Mission

Some companies sell software. Some companies keep the systems around it from becoming the reason a mission fails.

TENICA has spent nearly two decades in that second category. The Chantilly, Virginia company works across engineering, mission operations, cybersecurity, cloud and enterprise IT, digital modernization, and program support for U.S. intelligence, defense, space, and other federal customers. Those are not separate service lines in the field. They are often the same operating problem wearing different badges.

Nicholas P. Scherling leads TENICA as president and CEO. Dr. Wesley K. Kaplow serves as CTO. Their work exists in environments where the customer cannot simply accept a software update that created a new problem somewhere else. Security, continuity, people, and technical performance have to travel together.

That is why the company is worth understanding beyond the recent deal news. Government modernization is frequently described as a technology purchase. The real test is whether the new system can live inside a mission with existing operators, cleared teams, data dependencies, and consequences that do not disappear because a slide says transformation.

McNally Capital’s majority investment is a chapter in this story, not the whole story. The companies have said TENICA will keep its established leadership while McNally supports growth, capability expansion, workforce investment, and strategic opportunities. The terms were not disclosed. Neither company has announced a hiring target, acquisition timetable, or numeric growth plan.

That restraint matters. It leaves the useful question where it belongs: can TENICA add scale without weakening the institutional knowledge and execution discipline that made federal customers trust it in the first place?

The deal will matter less for its ownership structure than for what happens next inside the work. New programs, deeper technical capability, repeatable customer outcomes, and evidence that the company can grow while protecting the mission culture are the signals worth following.
