Setara Raises $90M Series A for Rare Disease Drug Studies

A genetic explanation can give a drug developer a target years before it gives a patient a treatment. Setara Biosciences is taking on the work between those points, with an inherited clinical program and a strategy that asks whether insights from rare disease can travel into much larger patient populations.

The San Diego biotechnology company announced a $90M Series A on October 30, 2026, following Jazz Pharmaceuticals' acquisition of Actio Biosciences. Led by co-founders David Goldstein and David Breckenridge, Setara will advance programs outside the lead epilepsy asset acquired by Jazz, putting independent financing behind a continuing team and pipeline. The arrangement gives the original scientific work more than one route toward patients, with different organizations responsible for the next stages.

What Setara's Series A finances

Setara's investors include Deerfield Management, Canaan, Droia Ventures, EcoR1, Euclidean Capital and Regeneron Ventures, alongside Jazz as a new shareholder through the Actio transaction. The company did not identify a sole lead investor or disclose a valuation. Its announcement describes a completed financing, giving the new business capital to advance its lead clinical program and earlier discovery work.

The starting position is unusual for a newly introduced company. Setara inherits a molecule already studied in healthy volunteers, executives familiar with the discovery approach and investors who have backed the work before. As in Dren Bio’s continued development after a program acquisition, the organizational story continues beyond the buyer’s selected asset. That continuity matters operationally: the people explaining the biology to a new clinical organization are carrying knowledge developed before the company had its current name. How effectively the team converts that knowledge into patient studies will shape the next chapter of the business.

The Jazz acquisition closed on September 15, with ABS-1230 remaining at Actio under Jazz ownership and other programs transferred into an independent company. Jazz's original transaction terms specified $820M upfront and up to $500M in contingent consideration. Those acquisition payments belong to the Actio transaction; Setara's $90M Series A is a separate financing event.

STAR-0871 carries two clinical assignments

Setara's lead candidate is STAR-0871, previously ABS-0871, an investigational oral small-molecule inhibitor of TRPV4. The company is developing the molecule for Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 2C, or CMT2C, and overactive bladder. In CMT2C, disease-causing mutations can make the TRPV4 channel excessively active, giving researchers a specific biological mechanism to investigate.

According to Fierce Biotech's account of the development plan, the healthy-volunteer portion of Phase 1 is complete, with a THERON Phase 1b study in CMT2C patients planned for 2027. Setara also plans a Phase 2a study in overactive bladder. These are planned patient studies, and the announcement provides no basis for treating either indication as a proven therapeutic use.

The two indications place different demands on the same development organization. A rare genetic disorder can give a comparatively clear account of the target's role, while a more prevalent condition presents a broader population in which to investigate its relevance. Shared biology makes that expansion worth studying; the patient evidence has to establish how much of the original reasoning carries across. Setara's financing supports the opportunity to pursue those separate questions through a common molecule.

Measuring improvement is part of the work

For a patient with a slowly progressing neuromuscular disorder, a useful medicine has to make a difference that a study can recognize. In an interview with BioPharma Dive, David Goldstein described the difficulty of assessing change when several muscle groups weaken and function becomes compromised in complicated ways. Knowing where to intervene leaves researchers with a demanding measurement problem.

That detail gives the financing a more concrete purpose than a general promise to accelerate discovery. Investigators must choose assessments that can connect a biological intervention with changes meaningful enough to interpret. The release does not disclose the full patient-study design or endpoints, so there is no basis here to judge how Setara will resolve that task. It does establish why clinical execution deserves as much attention as the target-selection story.

For biotech operators and investors, the distinction affects how progress should be read. Completing healthy-volunteer work moves a program forward, while evidence from the intended patient population answers a different set of questions. Setara's forthcoming studies will put its inherited scientific knowledge into the setting where the company wants that knowledge to help people.

The founders remain close to the handoff

Setara's co-founders are David Goldstein, president and executive chair, and David Breckenridge, CSO. The leadership team also includes Pete Condon as CBO and Cayce Denton as CFO. The company's own LinkedIn presence identifies Goldstein's current leadership role and traces the business to the genetics-driven approach developed at Actio.

Goldstein is maintaining a position at Jazz at least through acceptance of the ABS-1230 new drug application submission for KCNT1-related epilepsy, according to Setara's announcement. His responsibilities therefore extend across the acquisition's boundary. One program moves through a larger pharmaceutical organization while the remaining pipeline develops within an independently financed biotech, with a founder still connected to both assignments.

The investor relationship crosses that boundary too. Jazz has ownership of Actio and a minority interest in the independent business, as its closing announcement explains. Returning investors continue supporting the pipeline outside the acquired lead asset. The structure preserves a financial connection to the wider research effort while giving Setara its own organization in which to make development choices.

Where Setara's broader strategy leads

Setara's earlier discovery portfolio includes genetic epilepsies and expansion indications such as migraine. The company describes an approach that starts with rare diseases and explores whether related target biology can inform treatment of more prevalent conditions. Public materials do not establish specific clinical candidates or timelines for all of those earlier programs.

That leaves the company with a sequence of practical decisions about where to spend scientific attention as well as money. STAR-0871 supplies the near-term clinical work; the discovery portfolio keeps other possibilities in view. As the CMT2C patient study approaches, Setara's team will be preparing to measure what happens when the molecule reaches the people whose disease helped explain the target in the first place.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Setara relate to Actio Biosciences and Jazz Pharmaceuticals?

Setara carries forward programs outside ABS-1230 following Jazz’s acquisition of Actio, which closed September 15, 2026. Jazz retained the lead epilepsy program through Actio and received a minority stake in the independent spinout.

Why is Setara studying STAR-0871 in two different conditions?

STAR-0871 inhibits TRPV4, a channel implicated in CMT2C, and Setara is exploring its potential in overactive bladder. The company’s strategy uses insights from rare genetic disease to investigate related biology in more prevalent conditions; each indication requires clinical evidence.

What clinical progress has Setara reported, and what is planned?

Setara reports completion of the healthy-volunteer portion of Phase 1 for STAR-0871. It plans the THERON Phase 1b study in CMT2C patients in 2027 and a separate Phase 2a study in overactive bladder; patient benefit has not been established by the financing announcement.

What makes measuring a CMT2C treatment challenging?

CMT2C can affect several muscle groups and progresses slowly, complicating the assessment of changes in function. David Goldstein discussed that measurement challenge in an interview with BioPharma Dive; Setara’s financing announcement does not disclose the full patient-study design or endpoints.
