REGENT Moves Seagliders From Prototype to Production

REGENT is building Seaglider vessels, a new class of high-speed maritime craft designed to float, rise onto hydrofoils, and fly in ground effect over coastal water. Co-founders Billy Thalheimer, CEO, and Mike Klinker, CTO, are trying to combine aircraft-like speed with boat access and the dock infrastructure coastal communities already use.

The company matters now because its story has moved beyond drawings and a small prototype. REGENT has a full-scale Viceroy test vehicle on the water and, in June 2026, completed a 255,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in North Kingstown, Rhode Island.

REGENT reports a commercial order book above $10B, $15M in U.S. Marine Corps contracts, and more than $100M raised. Those figures show substantial customer and investor interest, but the next phase is governed by certification, full-scale flight testing, production quality, and whether committed operators receive vessels that can run reliable routes.

About REGENT and the Seaglider

Thalheimer and Klinker founded REGENT in December 2020 after meeting at MIT and later working together at Boeing. That background helps explain the architecture of the company as much as the vehicle. REGENT is neither a conventional ferry builder nor an aviation startup trying to force an aircraft into a harbor; it is assembling maritime operations, aerospace controls, electric propulsion, hydrofoil dynamics, and manufacturing into one system.

The flagship commercial product is Viceroy, a 12-passenger Seaglider. At low speed, the vessel sits on its hull. Once clear of the dock, underwater foils lift it above the chop, and it is designed to transition into wing-in-ground-effect flight within roughly one wingspan of the water's surface. REGENT states targets of up to 180 miles of range and 180 mph with current batteries, while using existing docks instead of requiring a new network of runways.

That operating sequence is the product thesis in plain English: use the harbor like a boat, cross open water with aircraft-like speed, and avoid the infrastructure burden that usually accompanies a new regional transport network. The company is also developing Squire, an autonomous defense-focused Seaglider drone, which expands the technical program into logistics, surveillance, search and rescue, and other maritime missions.

Why REGENT's Factory Changes the Story

Deep-tech companies are easy to photograph beside a prototype. Production is where the flattering camera angles disappear and the difficult interfaces take over: supplier tolerances, work instructions, battery installation, traceability, quality systems, regulator access, and acceptance testing. REGENT's completed facility at 1 Seaglider Way puts those interfaces on one waterfront campus.

The 255,000-square-foot site includes structural assembly, wing and hydrofoil integration, battery and systems installation, and water-based test and acceptance operations. Its location inside Quonset Business Park gives REGENT direct water access for sea trials and proximity to Rhode Island's maritime and composites workforce. The factory is designed for Viceroy production as well as the Squire program.

The distinction matters because customer commitments are not delivered fleets. REGENT says its order book exceeds $10B across six continents, yet the economic value of that interest depends on the company producing certifiable vessels at consistent quality and supporting them in operation. The new facility creates the capacity to attempt that handoff; it does not remove the execution risk.

The Certification and Market Bet

Seagliders occupy an unusual regulatory and technical category. REGENT describes them as maritime vessels that operate exclusively over water, and the company is pursuing certification through the U.S. Coast Guard while working with international classification and maritime authorities. That route could help the company use existing docks and maritime operating systems, but it still requires evidence that a new vessel can meet rigorous safety and operating standards.

The 2026 Viceroy test campaign continued on-water and simulation work after the full-scale prototype began sea trials in 2025. REGENT said in March that human ground-effect flight remained a 2026 objective and that first customer deliveries were expected in 2027. Those milestones remain future-facing in this analysis.

The market opportunity is broad because coastal congestion is broad. Passenger operators want faster regional connections, logistics companies want lower-cost coastal movement than traditional aircraft can provide, and defense planners are evaluating platforms that can move people or cargo across island chains. Associated Press reporting also captured the questions that accompany that promise, including stability across sea states, maintainability, mission fit, and cost at scale.

Leadership Across Maritime and Aerospace

Thalheimer leads the company as co-founder and CEO, while Klinker leads technical development as co-founder and CTO. REGENT's current leadership roster adds certification, manufacturing, commercial, people, and program experience, reflecting the fact that the next phase cannot be solved by vehicle engineering alone.

The founders' MIT and Boeing history is relevant because the company is attempting a systems problem. Flight controls must work with hydrofoils. Battery and propulsion choices must work with route economics. Manufacturing processes must produce traceable hardware. Certification evidence must follow the vehicle from simulation to water testing and eventually into customer service.

REGENT's October 2023 $60M Series A was co-led by 8090 Industries and Founders Fund and brought total funding at that time to $90M. Current company materials say total capital has since passed $100M and name Japan Airlines and Lockheed Martin among the investors. The mix of financial and strategic capital fits a business that needs technical patience, industrial capacity, operator relationships, and defense credibility at the same time.

Hiring Is an Execution Signal

REGENT reported more than 100 team members by the end of 2025. The company has pledged to create 300 jobs at the Rhode Island facility, with potential growth to 750 positions over a decade, and its current careers page spans certification, engineering, manufacturing, supply chain, Seaglider operations, government and defense, and commercial development.

Those functions reveal where the company expects pressure. Certification staff must translate novel engineering into auditable safety evidence. Manufacturing and supply-chain teams must make a low-volume prototype repeatable. Test and operations teams must turn every hour on the water into data that improves the vehicle and its operating envelope. Commercial teams must keep prospective routes aligned with what the technology and certification schedule can support.

Hiring at this stage is therefore less about adding headcount than adding interfaces. The important employees are the people who can keep a design decision from becoming a factory problem, a certification delay, or an operating surprise months later.

What Operators and Investors Should Watch

REGENT has assembled the ingredients that make an advanced-mobility company difficult to dismiss: a full-scale prototype, a completed factory, strategic and financial backers, government work, and a company-reported global order book. The next evidence will arrive through a more demanding sequence: full-scale flight performance, certification progress, production-rate discipline, customer delivery, and reliable service on real coastal routes.

That sequence will also test the core business claim. Existing docks may lower infrastructure requirements, but operators still need charging, maintenance, crew training, weather limits, schedules, and enough route demand to support the fleet. A fast vessel becomes a transport network only when those operating details hold together.

The useful signal will be found in the handoff from test crews to manufacturing teams, from regulators to operators, and eventually from the Rhode Island waterfront to the first routes customers can trust.
