NewEdge Power Gets SVP Backing for Battery Storage Venture

A power developer has a payroll long before a site has an operating battery. NewEdge Power is bringing Strategic Value Partners into that stretch of the business, pairing support for its development organization with a joint venture that will fund selected power projects as they advance.

The partnership announced October 29, 2026 starts with a seed portfolio targeting up to 1.2 GW of capacity in PJM. SVP-managed funds will make an initial capital commitment, while NewEdge leads development. Financial terms were undisclosed, and the portfolio figure describes a development target rather than power already connected to the grid.

For co-founders Joe Nano and Steve Barna, the arrangement ties a larger capital partner to both the company's capabilities and the assets those capabilities can produce. For the broader power market, it puts attention on a necessary part of adding supply: sustaining the people who get individual sites ready for investment.

How SVP's investment connects the company and its projects

The transaction has two related jobs. The joint venture gives SVP a route to fund selected advancing projects, while its investment in NewEdge's platform will support the company's development team over the investment period. Those commitments connect the developer's ability to keep working with decisions about where project capital goes.

A corporate development team and a portfolio of power assets carry different responsibilities. The team must evaluate opportunities, coordinate specialists and keep its organization functioning across projects with different circumstances. A project needs its own path from an identified site toward construction and operation. Supporting the company gives that work continuity while capital decisions remain attached to particular assets.

That is the useful commercial reading of this announcement. The relationship accommodates an organization whose work continues between asset-level investment decisions. Public terms do not establish an investment amount, ownership percentage, financing instrument or construction timetable, so the commitment cannot be translated into a priced venture round or a fully financed buildout.

NewEdge's existing backers provide continuity. SJF Ventures led its Series A in August 2025, and the current announcement identifies Segue Sustainable Infrastructure and North Sky Capital as initial investment partners. The new SVP relationship follows that history; the earlier Series A should retain its own date and identity.

Why land and grid expertise belong in the financing story

NewEdge develops utility-scale battery storage, solar and distributed power across U.S. markets. Its business begins with identifying and qualifying locations where power infrastructure can be developed, which makes a promising parcel the beginning of a commercial process rather than the finished product an electricity market needs.

The company's leadership backgrounds show how that process is divided. Nano, CEO and co-founder, leads strategy, corporate development and capital formation. Barna, CDO and co-founder, leads development, with experience spanning land origination, contracting, financing, procurement and construction. The two responsibilities meet when a development opportunity needs enough substance for a capital decision.

Transmission and regulatory expertise also sit inside NewEdge's leadership. Ganesh Velummylum is Chief Transmission & Regulatory Officer, while Payne Morgan is Chief Distributed Generation Officer. Their presence gives a clearer picture of the development organization than describing NewEdge as another battery technology startup. The company is assembling and advancing opportunities for physical power infrastructure, with grid and market knowledge part of the work.

NewEdge attributes more than 48 GW of historical power-project experience to its team collectively. That company-reported figure spans the team's careers and several technologies; it should be understood as professional experience rather than capacity NewEdge owns or operates. The relevant question for this partnership is how that experience carries into the specific sites selected for the venture.

PJM demand creates opportunity with a location attached

The seed portfolio targets PJM, where additional electricity demand has become an important planning concern. Manufacturing, electrification and data centers feature in the partners' explanation for the deal. A battery project still needs a workable location and route to the grid, even when the regional case for more capacity looks compelling.

PJM's own 2026 forecast discussion adds a useful layer of discipline. The operator continues to project substantial long-term demand growth, while reducing some near-term expectations after changes to economic and electric-vehicle assumptions and closer examination of large-load requests. Its process explicitly considers whether requests are likely to materialize and whether demand has been counted more than once.

For a developer, that distinction makes location and timing commercial questions. Regional demand can rise while the prospects for a particular site depend on which customers arrive, when they need electricity and what infrastructure can serve them. A portfolio gives the partners several opportunities to evaluate, with selected projects receiving capital as their development progresses.

The announced 1.2 GW ceiling should stay attached to that development context. It is a target for the seed portfolio, with no disclosed battery duration, site-by-site schedule or commercial-operation dates. Operators assessing the opportunity need those details as projects advance; converting a power-capacity target into a claim about round-the-clock energy delivery would skip several decisions still belonging to the developers and grid.

A capital partner enters NewEdge's development calendar

Strategic Value Partners invests across credit, private equity and hard assets, including power and infrastructure. That breadth gives context to its role here: the announced relationship reaches into a development platform and project selection rather than stopping at a conventional company-financing headline.

SVP Managing Director Andrew Shore will join NewEdge's board as an observer. The designation describes participation in governance without claiming a voting-director seat. Alongside the capital relationship, it brings the investor closer to the company whose team will advance the portfolio.

For landowners and development partners, the organization across the table matters over time. A site-development relationship includes continuing work after the initial opportunity has been identified, and NewEdge's platform expansion is aimed at strengthening the team carrying those responsibilities. SVP will then make funding decisions around selected projects as they move forward.

The portfolio now has a larger institutional relationship around that progression. Nano's capital work and Barna's development work meet again each time a site becomes ready for its next decision, with PJM's changing power needs supplying the setting in which those decisions will be made.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the SVP partnership support both NewEdge and individual power projects?

SVP will fund selected projects as they advance under a joint venture led by NewEdge. Its separate platform investment will be funded over the investment period to expand NewEdge’s development team and capabilities.

Does the 1.2 GW portfolio represent operating battery capacity?

No. The announcement describes a seed portfolio targeting up to 1.2 GW in PJM. It does not disclose site-by-site operating dates or battery duration.

Why does a developer’s site and grid expertise matter to this investment?

NewEdge identifies and develops locations for power infrastructure. The partnership connects that development work with capital for selected advancing projects, making site viability and a route to the grid central to the commercial relationship.

How does PJM’s demand outlook inform the opportunity?

PJM continues to forecast substantial long-term electricity demand growth. Its 2026 forecast also lowered some near-term expectations after updated assumptions and closer review of large-load requests, showing why project location and timing remain important.

How does the SVP investment relate to NewEdge’s earlier Series A?

SJF Ventures led NewEdge’s Series A in 2025. The SVP platform investment and joint venture were announced October 29, 2026, with financial terms undisclosed and no new series label announced.
