Peak Energy Raises $108M for Sodium-Ion Grid Storage

General Motors is bringing its battery labs into a business where the equipment stays put. Its relationship with Peak Energy connects cell development in Michigan to a storage manufacturer preparing to scale in California, with utilities and data centers among the intended buyers.

Peak announced $108M in new financing and the closing of an oversubscribed Series B on October 21, 2026. GM Ventures led the round, joined by Maverick Silicon, Infinite Capital, Eclipse, Xora Innovation and LG Technology Ventures. The Burlingame company intends to use the capital for domestic manufacturing, customer commitments and expansion into data-center power infrastructure, giving its passively cooled sodium-ion systems a larger industrial assignment.

Peak Energy connects its financing to a manufacturing ramp

Peak's financing arrives after it selected Sacramento for a factory intended to produce up to 4 GWh of battery storage systems annually. The July factory announcement described a 183,000-square-foot facility with production expected in Q1 2027. Those figures describe a planned manufacturing operation; they should be read against the work of commissioning equipment and bringing systems into customers' projects.

For an energy-storage buyer, a production calendar carries unusual weight. Equipment has to arrive inside a larger project involving electrical infrastructure, construction and commercial obligations. An attractive battery specification becomes much more useful when a supplier can manufacture it on a schedule the rest of the project can use. That is the operating connection between Peak's new financing and its factory expansion.

The company was founded in 2023 and had previously disclosed a $10M Seed financing and a $55M Series A in 2024. Its latest announcement establishes a new capital event without disclosing valuation or a complete instrument-by-instrument funding history. Keeping those blanks visible avoids turning separate financing announcements into an unsupported lifetime total.

CEO and co-founder Landon Mossburg leads Peak with co-founders Cameron Dales, President and CCO, and Liam O'Connor, COO. CTO Paul Durkee oversees development of the storage system. Together, those roles span cell and system engineering, commercial commitments and the industrial work required to turn a technical design into repeatable deliveries.

Passive cooling changes the customer's operating calculation

Peak builds sodium-ion storage around a passive thermal design. The commercial premise is that equipment requiring less active cooling can spend less energy maintaining its own operating conditions, while reducing the machinery a customer must maintain. For a stationary asset intended to remain useful for years, those supporting systems belong in the buying calculation alongside battery capacity.

GM's explanation of its sodium-ion strategy makes the application choice explicit: stationary storage gives battery engineers a different set of priorities from a vehicle. Tolerance for operating conditions can help simplify the surrounding system. The value therefore reaches beyond cell chemistry into the equipment, service and energy consumption of a working installation.

Peak reports potential energy-cost reductions of up to 20% compared with conventional systems. That is the company's performance claim, rather than an independent operating result established by this financing. A customer's realized economics will depend on the installation and its use, so an investment announcement cannot settle the lifetime-cost question on its own.

The same distinction gives buyers a practical way to evaluate the proposition. They can examine the power consumed by auxiliary equipment, the maintenance obligations written into a contract and the performance delivered over time. Peak is asking those buyers to assign commercial value to the equipment its design removes, making simplicity a consideration with a measurable cost attached.

GM's role reaches from the cell to the supply chain

The partnership announced in June assigns different responsibilities to GM and Peak. GM develops sodium-ion cells in its Michigan battery labs and retains exclusive manufacturing rights. Peak incorporates those cells into its own energy-storage systems, bringing the relationship into the stationary-power market.

That division matters when interpreting the Sacramento expansion. A factory producing complete storage systems and the manufacture of the cells inside them are separate industrial activities. Peak's domestic manufacturing plan should be understood alongside the development relationship, without assuming every step of its future cell supply chain is already operating in California.

For GM, the partnership gives battery-development knowledge another commercial destination. For Peak, access to that work connects its system design to an established industrial partner's capabilities. The investor relationship and the technical relationship reinforce each other, although neither makes the outcome of a factory ramp automatic.

The broader battery market is accommodating several kinds of work at once. DevCuration's coverage of Mana Battery's sodium-ion financing and Holyvolt's battery-materials research follows different points in that chain. Peak's announcement belongs closer to the handoff where a chemistry and system design must become equipment available for a customer's project.

Customer agreements put dates around the expansion

Peak says it has more than $1B in commercial commitments, a measure of announced demand that should remain distinct from recognized revenue. One disclosed agreement gives that demand a clearer timetable: the Jupiter Power contract calls for approximately 720 MWh in 2027 and includes an option for a further 4 GWh across 2028-2030. The later volume remains conditional on that option.

The difference between an initial delivery and a capacity reservation matters to both parties. Jupiter can preserve access to future supply while Peak plans manufacturing around a relationship that may expand. Reading the entire headline ceiling as already delivered equipment would erase the commercial choices still inside the agreement.

Peak has also announced an RWE Americas pilot in Eastern Wisconsin. A pilot provides a setting to evaluate the system in operation; it carries a different commitment from a broad deployment. Together, the agreements show several stages of customer adoption rather than one uniform measure of traction.

The data-center expansion adds another buyer with an urgent interest in dependable power. As the Sacramento production target approaches, Peak's financing supports a chain of work reaching from its engineering teams and GM's cell program to the equipment Jupiter expects in 2027. The calendar now gives those relationships a shared industrial deadline.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does passive cooling affect the economics of grid storage?

Peak Energy designs its sodium-ion systems to operate without active cooling. Removing cooling equipment can reduce auxiliary electricity use and maintenance requirements; realized savings depend on the installation and operating conditions.

What does General Motors contribute to Peak Energy's storage strategy?

GM develops sodium-ion cells in its Michigan battery labs and retains exclusive manufacturing rights under the announced partnership. Peak incorporates the cells into its energy-storage systems, connecting cell development with stationary-storage deployment.

How firm is the demand in the Jupiter Power agreement?

The disclosed agreement calls for approximately 720 MWh in 2027 and includes an option for an additional 4 GWh across 2028-2030. The option volume should be distinguished from initial deliveries, and company-reported commercial commitments should not be treated as recognized revenue.

What manufacturing milestone follows the new financing?

Peak expects its planned Sacramento factory to begin production in Q1 2027. The facility is designed for up to 4 GWh of battery systems annually; that capacity is a target rather than verified current output.
