ASI Raises $325M Series C for Critical Infrastructure AI

An airline's preferred route has to fit inside a sky shared with everyone else's preferred routes. ASI has built a business around that coordination problem, giving operators a way to examine how weather, traffic and capacity could collide while they still have time to change a plan.

The Boston company announced a $325M Series C at a $3B valuation on October 20, 2026. Spark Capital led the financing, with participation from affiliates of Citadel Securities, Meritech Capital, Craft Ventures, Energy Impact Partners and Andreessen Horowitz. ASI plans to expand deployments across energy, logistics and tactical edge environments while adding research and engineering capacity in Boston.

That expansion carries an institutional challenge alongside the technical one. Predicting a conflict is useful; getting organizations responsible for connected assets to act on a shared forecast is where the commercial relationship becomes consequential. ASI's work with the Federal Aviation Administration puts that relationship inside the planning of the national airspace.

What ASI's Series C finances

ASI, previously known as Air Space Intelligence, develops software that models physical operations and evaluates possible decisions. Its stated expansion extends that work across sectors with different assets, operating rules and people responsible for the consequences. An electricity network and an airline network may both need better forecasts, but the customer still needs software that understands the particular decision waiting on the screen.

The funding follows an earlier $34M Series B announced in December 2023, led by a16z with Bloomberg Beta, Renegade Partners and Spark Capital participating. Spark's lead role in the Series C therefore builds on an existing investment relationship. The current announcement gives a round amount and valuation without establishing a complete lifetime funding total.

ASI's current leadership includes co-founder and CEO Phillip Buckendorf, co-founder and Chief Research Officer Kris Dorosz, and co-founder Lucas Kukielka. CTO Jon Varsanik previously led engineering teams at Google, including YouTube's core infrastructure team. The founding team's research and commercial engineering history now sits alongside technology leadership experienced in infrastructure that must keep operating as it changes.

For buyers, that combination matters through the work it can deliver. A forecast has to survive changing inputs, reach the appropriate people and fit the organization's existing responsibilities. Hiring researchers and engineers supports that continuing effort across each deployment.

Why the FAA relationship changes the scale

The FAA selected ASI in June for Flow Management Data and Services, or FMDS, and Strategic Management of Airspace, Routes, and Trajectories, or SMART. The agency describes FMDS as a shared traffic-management foundation and SMART as a way to coordinate schedules and trajectories before departure. Forecasts of demand and available capacity can then inform decisions earlier in a flight's journey.

That changes the setting in which ASI's software has to be useful. An airline can adjust its own plans, while a national traffic-management system must consider the capacity those plans share with other operators. Weather, airport constraints and flight demand belong in the same planning discussion because their effects travel across organizational boundaries.

ASI describes its FAA award as a 12-year, $875M contract. The agency's announcement independently establishes the procurement and intended functions; anticipated improvements in delays and efficiency remain goals rather than a published nationwide performance result. The long duration places ASI inside an ongoing modernization relationship.

For an operator evaluating similar software, the purchasing question becomes specific: how will a useful forecast get incorporated into a coordinated decision? The FAA's account of shared information and planning before departure helps explain what the customer is trying to buy. The capacity to see a problem earlier has to arrive with a workable way to respond.

Aviation funding also supports other kinds of operating responsibility. Reliable Robotics' recent financing supports its push toward certified aircraft autonomy, while ASI's FAA relationship centers on traffic planning across a shared network. Identifying the people and decisions a system serves helps keep those investment stories distinct.

Where defense and energy add different demands

ASI's October Army announcement describes a five-year, $99M indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity contract supporting command and control. The company says the initial task order expands its work on Corps-level fires deconfliction. The IDIQ structure provides a vehicle for orders; its stated value should not be folded into the venture round or treated as revenue already recognized.

The energy work brings another form of coordination. ASI's collaboration with National Grid, announced in May, covers predictive modeling and decision support for grid planning and operations. The disclosed areas include resilience planning, outage mapping and the siting and interconnection of distributed energy resources. These are concrete planning responsibilities, with projected benefits that depend on implementation.

Read together, the relationships explain the breadth of ASI's ambition more clearly than an undifferentiated list of customers. Aviation involves traffic flows and shared capacity; defense brings mission-specific coordination; energy brings network topology, resilience and investment decisions. Carrying predictive technology across those settings gives ASI more commercial territory and more work translating each customer's constraints into a useful system.

The $325M finances that translation as deployments expand. In the airspace work, its consequence will continue to unfold between traffic managers and airlines deciding how much can move, where it can go and when the next aircraft should leave the ground.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does ASI's FAA work extend beyond an individual airline's route planning?

The FAA selected ASI for FMDS and SMART, which support traffic management across the National Airspace System. Shared forecasts of demand, weather and capacity are intended to help airlines and traffic managers coordinate schedules and trajectories before departure.

How should the FAA and Army contract values be read alongside the financing?

The $325M Series C is venture financing. ASI describes its FAA award as a 12-year, $875M contract and its Army agreement as a five-year, $99M IDIQ vehicle. Contract values are separate from financing and do not establish revenue already recognized.

Who leads ASI's research and technology work?

ASI's current company page identifies co-founder Kris Dorosz as Chief Research Officer and Jon Varsanik as CTO. Phillip Buckendorf is co-founder and CEO, and Lucas Kukielka is also a co-founder.

What work does the National Grid collaboration cover?

ASI and National Grid announced predictive modeling and decision support for grid planning and operations. Disclosed areas include resilience planning, outage mapping and distributed energy resource siting and interconnection; projected benefits depend on implementation.

What will ASI use the Series C capital for?

ASI says the financing will support expanded deployments in energy, logistics and tactical edge environments and additional research and engineering capacity in Boston. The announcement does not establish a complete lifetime funding total or disclose deployment profitability.
