Reservoir Raises $8M Seed for Predictive Water Heaters
Reservoir, a Boston company building predictive electric heat-pump water heaters, has raised an $8M Seed. Asymmetric Capital Partners led the round, with Founder Collective and MCJ participating.
The capital will support more installations around Boston, Reservoir's initial market, while the company grows a fleet of connected appliances that can shift electricity use away from expensive peak periods. The immediate bet is straightforward: make hot water more reliable, efficient, and useful for homeowners, then turn that installed base into flexible grid infrastructure.
Reservoir has installed about 100 systems and is targeting roughly 1,000 by the end of 2027, according to CEO Luke Winston-Almanzar. That target is still ahead of the company, but it frames the round clearly: this is deployment capital for a hardware, software, and service business that has to prove itself one basement at a time.
What Happened
Reservoir announced the Seed on August 12, 2026. Asymmetric Capital Partners led the $8M round, with Founder Collective and MCJ participating. A valuation was not disclosed.
The latest announcement updates a funding history that previously looked smaller. MCJ's November 2025 investment note described a $5M Seed led by Founder Collective. It is unclear whether the new $8M figure reflects an expanded close or another restructuring of the same Seed, so the two figures should not be added together.
Reservoir will use the funding to install more units in the Boston area and build operating density in its first market. The company currently serves parts of Massachusetts, southern New Hampshire, and southern Maine, but Boston remains the center of the deployment story and the clearest test of whether its integrated model can scale.
The Product Is More Than a Better Tank
Reservoir combines a heat pump, industrial controls, multiple managed heating elements, and software the company calls Thermal Intelligence. Its system learns household hot-water patterns and schedules heating toward periods when electricity is cheaper or cleaner, creating a thermal battery inside the home without asking residents to plan their showers around utility rates.
The product also tackles the mundane problems that decide whether homeowners will care. Reservoir offers leak sensing, app control, time-of-use optimization, Solar Sync, smart-home integrations, and over-the-air updates. The Max model adds No-Wait Shower recirculation, rapid recovery, freeze protection, and up to 150 gallons of virtual hot-water capacity from a 50-gallon tank.
That collection of features matters because climate hardware rarely wins on efficiency alone. Homeowners replace failed water heaters under time pressure, often buying whatever a plumber can install immediately. Reservoir's challenge is not merely to demonstrate better technology. It must make the purchase, installation, reliability, and service experience feel safer than buying the familiar appliance already sitting on the truck.
Why Reservoir Built Its Own Service Layer
CEO Luke Winston-Almanzar previously helped scale Formlabs, where direct customer relationships mattered when established distribution channels did not embrace a new kind of hardware. Reservoir applied the same lesson to hot water by building its own plumbing and installation operation. That choice keeps product feedback, sales, field service, and customer experience closer together.
The leadership team fits the assignment. Gabriel Parisi-Amon, CPO, previously co-founded water-technology company Nebia, while Jake Felser, CTO, brings experience across mechanical, electrical, firmware, and software systems. Together with Winston-Almanzar, the team covers consumer hardware, technical integration, and go-to-market execution, a useful mix when the product has to connect to both household pipes and power markets.
Reservoir's current pricing shows the importance of owning the service layer. The company lists Core at $5,000 and Max at $6,500 before rebates, with installation included. Massachusetts incentives reduce the displayed prices to $3,950 and $5,450, allowing Reservoir to compete on a combined equipment-and-installation quote instead of leaving the homeowner to assemble the project alone.
Why This Matters for the Grid
Water heating accounts for roughly 18% of household energy use, making it a large electrical load hiding behind an appliance most people ignore. A conventional tank responds to temperature changes without knowing when grid demand is high. Reservoir's predictive controls can move more heating to off-peak periods while keeping hot water available, turning comfort into a form of demand flexibility.
Reservoir and Sense demonstrated that grid-responsive approach during Boston Climate Week in May 2026. At a neighborhood level, coordinated water heaters could reduce strain on local infrastructure. At larger scale, an aggregated fleet could participate in utility demand-response programs, although that business model remains a future plan rather than established revenue.
The company's goal of roughly 1,000 installations by the end of 2027 is therefore more than a sales marker. Winston-Almanzar says a fleet of that size begins to represent megawatt-scale capacity. The claim still has to be proven through deployment, but it explains why investors can view Reservoir as both a home-appliance company and an energy-infrastructure company.
What the $8M Seed Must Prove
The next stage is operational. Reservoir has to install more systems without allowing service quality, costs, or product reliability to drift. Hardware margins, skilled labor, local incentives, and customer acquisition all matter, and none can be patched later with a nicer dashboard.
That complexity is also where the defensibility may live. A competitor can copy a feature list faster than it can reproduce a trusted installation network, field data, integrated controls, and a growing fleet that utilities can coordinate. Reservoir is wagering that the difficult parts reinforce one another when the company owns enough of the experience.
Asymmetric Capital Partners, Founder Collective, and MCJ are backing that wager at Seed stage. If Reservoir can move from about 100 units to about 1,000 while preserving the customer experience, it will have more than a clever water heater. It will have early evidence that household electrification can become grid infrastructure by first becoming a product people would choose anyway.
