Relativity Networks Raises $22M for Hollow-Core Fiber

Relativity Networks raised $22M through a SAFE on August 19, 2026, bringing new investors into a company trying to change the physical layer beneath distributed AI. The financing was more than double the company's stated target and included Rhapsody Venture Partners, Bell Ventures Inc., and Faster Than Glass LLC.

The money did not arrive alone. In the same announcement, Relativity Networks disclosed a $40M follow-on order from an unnamed leading hyperscaler after that customer tested its ChronoCore hollow-core fiber technology between 2 data centers. The pairing of capital and customer demand is the real story: this is not only a bet on better fiber physics, but on whether that physics can survive manufacturing, installation, and procurement.

What Happened

The $22M financing used a simple agreement for future equity rather than a priced equity round. Relativity Networks did not disclose a valuation, lead investor, full investor list, valuation cap, discount, or other conversion terms. The company said only that the SAFE exceeded its target by more than 2 times and brought in new investors including Rhapsody Venture Partners, Bell Ventures Inc., and Faster Than Glass LLC.

That distinction matters because a SAFE can provide growth capital without setting a public price for the company today. It also means this should not be described as a Series A, Series B, or any other conventional priced round. The available evidence supports a $22M SAFE and no more elaborate financial label.

Relativity Networks had previously disclosed outside capital. Fortune reported a $4.6M pre-seed financing from private investors in February 2025, and Prysmian announced a separate strategic investment in July 2025 without an amount in the release reviewed. Those disclosures are not clean enough to calculate a definitive total-funding figure, so the useful number here is the one the company actually announced: $22M.

Why ChronoCore Matters

ChronoCore is Relativity Networks' anti-resonant hollow-core fiber platform. Instead of sending light through a solid glass core, the design guides light through air. Relativity Networks and manufacturing partner Prysmian report propagation of about 3.4 microseconds per kilometer, compared with about 5 microseconds per kilometer in conventional glass fiber. That is roughly 47% faster propagation, or about 32% lower latency across the same distance.

The company's technical argument begins with synchronization. Large distributed AI systems need accelerators at separate locations to exchange results and remain coordinated. When compute spreads across campuses in search of available power, distance becomes part of the system budget. Switching and software can improve many parts of a network, but they cannot repeal the travel time imposed by the transmission medium.

Relativity Networks calls that cost the "Propagation Tax." The phrase is the company's own, but the underlying constraint is concrete: a faster medium can let operators place sites farther apart within the same latency window or reduce latency at the same distance. For data-center developers caught between power availability, land, water, permitting, and network requirements, that turns fiber from a utility purchase into an architectural decision.

From Laboratory Work to Deployable Cable

Deep-tech financing becomes more interesting when the manufacturing evidence stops looking like a science demonstration. Relativity Networks was founded in 2023 by Jason Eichenholz, co-founder and CEO, and Dr. Rodrigo Amezcua Correa, co-founder and CTO. The company says Amezcua Correa developed the underlying anti-resonant hollow-core fiber work at CREOL, the College of Optics and Photonics at the University of Central Florida, while Eichenholz leads commercialization.

The commercialization path runs through Prysmian. In July 2026, Prysmian reported that the companies produced a 10mm-diameter cable containing 24 ChronoCore hollow-core fibers and reliably installed it in Dura-Line microducts at speeds up to 350 feet per minute. Prysmian said its Eindhoven facility was scaling fiber production while its Claremont, North Carolina plant manufactured the cable.

That milestone does not prove universal deployment, but it addresses a question that ruins plenty of beautiful laboratory technologies: can the product be manufactured, cabled, installed, and connected using a real infrastructure ecosystem? Relativity Networks now has partner-confirmed evidence across those steps. The company-reported $40M follow-on order adds a commercial test, although the customer and delivery schedule remain undisclosed.

Why Investors Are Paying Attention

Rhapsody Venture Partners describes Relativity Networks as a hollow-core optical-fiber company addressing data-center constraints. Bell Ventures invests in network, enterprise, media, and data technologies that can benefit from Bell's fiber, wireless, and commercial reach. Their participation fits a round where the core risk is not another software feature but the industrialization of a new transmission medium.

The investor logic appears to rest on 3 layers of validation. The founders have a credible photonics and commercialization background, Prysmian has committed manufacturing capacity and verified deployment work, and an unnamed hyperscaler has reportedly moved from testing to a $40M follow-on order. None of that guarantees broad adoption. It does make the bet more legible than a financing built entirely on projected demand.

The unnamed details still deserve attention. Relativity Networks did not disclose the hyperscaler, the order schedule, the SAFE's economics, or a specific use of proceeds. Operators and investors should watch whether production volumes, field deployments, and named customer evidence expand alongside the financing.

What This Signals for AI Infrastructure

AI infrastructure spending has trained the market to look upward in the stack at accelerators, models, and orchestration software. Relativity Networks is making a lower-level argument: when power pushes compute across geography, the cable between facilities can determine how much of that compute behaves like one synchronized system. That makes optical networking part of the AI-capacity equation rather than background plumbing.

The $22M SAFE is meaningful because it arrives as the company moves through multiple commercialization gates at once. A manufactured 24-fiber cable, an installation test with an established conduit partner, and a company-reported $40M repeat order form a stronger package than funding alone. Capital is following a technology that has begun to collect the boring evidence infrastructure buyers need.

For Relativity Networks, the next phase will be measured less by clever language about the speed of light and more by production, deployment, customer disclosure, and repeatability. The company has shown that its physics can leave the lab. The market now gets to see how far the business can carry it.
