Notey Turns Guitar Practice Into a Game Kids Control

Notey is a music-education startup that makes a real instrument the controller for a mobile game. The app listens through a device microphone, recognizes what a learner plays, and turns correct notes into movement through songs, challenges, game worlds, mini-games, and immediate feedback.

CEO and co-founder Mak Grgić and CTO and co-founder Adithya Bellathur founded Notey in 2022 around a stubborn problem: learning an instrument is rewarding, but practice competes with entertainment designed to win a child's attention in seconds. Notey's answer is to put the difficult work inside an experience that feels playable without replacing the physical instrument.

The company matters now because it is moving from a guitar-learning app toward a broader product and distribution system. Notey reports more than 100,000 consumer users and activity in 60 schools across four districts, while new operations in Malta and distribution partnerships are opening routes into Europe and Latin America. Those figures are company-reported, but they describe a more useful test than download volume alone: whether game design can create a repeatable practice habit for children, families, teachers, and schools.

What Notey Built

Notey currently focuses its consumer product on guitar practice for children and beginner players. The software uses the microphone already inside a phone or tablet, so the learner does not need to replace a real instrument with a plastic controller or buy a specialized pickup. The game reacts to live playing, which keeps progress tied to musical action rather than screen taps.

That distinction gives Notey a sharper position than a generic lesson app. Video can explain a chord. A tuner can show whether a note is in pitch. A game can supply goals and rewards. Notey is trying to combine those functions into a loop where the reward arrives only after the learner does the physical work.

The product also creates a bridge between consumer entertainment and formal instruction. Notey says teachers can see what students do between lessons, while schools can use the platform alongside existing curriculum. The company has worked with education partners including Internal Creations, a nonprofit classical-guitar program, and reports deployments across 60 schools in four districts.

Leadership Built Around Music and Software

Mak Grgić brings the problem from the performer's side. He is a classical guitarist and educator whose company biography and public materials connect Notey's origin to the difficulty of keeping students engaged through repetitive practice. Adithya Bellathur brings computer-science, machine-learning, music, and product experience to the technical side of making live audio control a game.

Current transaction materials also identify Yishai Pinchover as Chief Strategy Officer. The combination matters because Notey has to solve three problems at once: recognize music reliably, design a game children choose to return to, and build a distribution business that works through families, schools, telecom operators, and regional partners.

The company is not pretending those disciplines collapse into one job title. Its current team page shows work across curriculum, composition, game development, art, product design, district partnerships, outreach, and acquisition. Notey's stated values include creativity, curiosity, empathy, collaboration, love of music, and a growth mindset. Those are company-authored culture claims, but the functional mix behind them is visible in the work the product requires.

Traction Is Becoming a Distribution Question

Notey's reported scale has grown beyond an early product experiment. The company says it has passed 100,000 consumer users and reached 60 schools across four districts. It graduated from Techstars' 2023 program and received the 2023 InnoVision Award for Education and Technology.

The next question is how those users arrive and whether they keep practicing. Notey has announced a distribution partnership with Telemach for Slovenia and the wider Balkans, plus a relationship with EdMusica focused on Latin America. Its Maltese subsidiary now serves as a base for product and engineering work, European school and conservatory partnerships, publisher and label relationships, and distribution inside the European Union.

These channels turn distribution into part of the product strategy. A telecom operator can place Notey in front of households without the company acquiring every family through an app-store advertisement. A school can make the game part of a weekly practice routine. A local partner can help adapt language, curriculum, and market access. The open question is whether those routes create sustained practice rather than a brief burst of curiosity.

Funding the Next Instrument, Market, and Habit

Notey's September 2026 funding gives the company more room to test that model. Tivoli Ventures led a $3M seed package, Malta Venture Capital co-led it, and Malta Enterprise supplied a $1M non-dilutive development grant included in the headline total. The package supports product development, hiring, partnerships, additional instruments, and the European operation.

The roadmap is ambitious but still unfinished. Notey is preparing WorldBuilder, an AI-native tool intended to let users create music-learning game worlds around an adaptive curriculum. It is also targeting piano, voice, and recorder experiences for Q1 2027. Each new instrument brings its own recognition problems, content needs, pedagogy, and feedback design. A platform that works for guitar does not automatically become a credible piano or voice teacher because the menu gained another button.

That is why the company's four pending technology claims and content-creation plans matter less as a patent count than as an operating test. Notey needs to expand the catalog without making the learning experience noisy, shallow, or disconnected from real skill.

Hiring as an Operating Signal

Notey's current careers page lists six roles across marketing, software engineering, product design, and site operations in the United States and Malta. The page describes a small, remote-friendly, async-friendly team built around fast iteration and experimentation.

The hiring mix tells a clearer story than a generic growth announcement. Marketing roles point toward customer acquisition and regional expansion. Engineering and design roles point toward the product burden created by WorldBuilder and additional instruments. A Malta site-management role reflects the work of turning a new European entity into an operating base.

Notey is building at the intersection of music, education, gaming, and distribution. That intersection sounds tidy in a pitch deck and becomes messy in production, where latency, curriculum quality, child engagement, partner economics, and teacher trust all have to cooperate. The company's real advantage will not come from claiming those categories. It will come from making them behave like one coherent practice experience.

What Notey Signals for Music Education

The old argument in education technology was whether software would replace teachers. Notey is built around a more practical question: what happens during the six days between lessons, when the instrument is nearby and motivation is not?

By making a real guitar control the game, Notey ties screen time to physical practice. By working with schools and distribution partners, it is trying to place that loop inside routines that already exist. By expanding into creator tools and new instruments, it is testing whether a focused product can become a broader platform without losing the clarity that made the first version useful.

That is the company to watch. Notey does not need to prove that children like games. It needs to prove that the game can keep the instrument in their hands long enough for the hard part of learning to become the reason they return.

Notey makes a mobile music-learning game that uses a real instrument as the controller. The app listens through a device microphone, recognizes what the learner plays, and turns practice into progress through songs, challenges, game worlds, and immediate feedback.

Who founded Notey?

Notey was founded in 2022 by Mak Grgić, its CEO and a classical guitarist and educator, and Adithya Bellathur, its CTO and a computer scientist, musician, and product builder.

Who uses Notey?

Notey's current consumer product is designed mainly for children and beginner guitar players. The company also works with teachers and schools and reports activity in 60 schools across four districts.

How much funding has Notey raised?

Notey announced a $3M seed package in September 2026 led by Tivoli Ventures and co-led by Malta Venture Capital. The total includes a $1M non-dilutive development grant from Malta Enterprise, so it is not a $3M equity-only round.
