Notey Raises $3M to Turn Music Practice Into Play

In music education, the daily competitor is rarely another curriculum. It is every screen that asks less of the child than an instrument does. Notey has closed a $3M seed funding package to make that competition more manageable, combining a game controlled by a real instrument with a broader distribution system for families, schools, and teachers.

The financing was led by Tivoli Ventures and co-led by Malta Venture Capital. The headline total includes a $1M non-dilutive development grant from Malta Enterprise, which means the package should not be read as $3M of equity. The capital will support product development, additional instruments, hiring, partnerships, and a new European operation in Malta.

That combination matters because Notey is trying to solve two connected problems. The product must make real practice engaging enough to repeat, and the company must reach learners through channels that parents and educators already trust. The round gives Notey room to work on both sides at once.

What Notey Built

Notey turns a real guitar into the controller for a mobile game. The app listens through the device microphone, recognizes the notes a learner plays, and responds with songs, challenges, game worlds, mini-games, and immediate feedback. The current consumer product is available on iOS and Android and is designed primarily for children and beginner players.

The distinction is more important than the familiar language of gamification. A student does not advance by tapping through a simulated lesson. The game reacts to the physical instrument, so progress inside the experience depends on doing the practice outside a conventional screen-only loop. Notey describes the goal as making practice feel like play while keeping the musical skill, rather than the reward system, at the center.

CEO and co-founder Mak Grgić brings the perspective of a classical guitarist and educator. CTO and co-founder Adithya Bellathur brings machine-learning and engineering experience to the live-audio system. Current announcement materials also identify Yishai Pinchover as Chief Strategy Officer, adding experience in game-based education and international growth.

The $3M Package and Its Capital Mix

The official Techstars announcement describes a $3M seed round led by Tivoli Ventures and co-led by Malta Venture Capital. It also states that the total includes a $1M non-dilutive development grant from Malta Enterprise. The companies did not disclose the complete instrument mix, individual check sizes, valuation, or a full investor roster.

That accounting boundary matters. Public development money can extend a startup's ability to hire, build, and establish operations without carrying the same ownership implications as equity. Lumping every dollar into one venture-capital number makes the announcement simpler and the business story less accurate.

Notey has received earlier outside support. Its Wefunder campaign reports $117,112 raised from 84 investors in a Regulation Crowdfunding offering that closed in March 2025. The South Carolina Research Authority awarded Notey a $50,000 Acceleration Grant in September 2024. Those records provide useful financing history, but they do not support a clean cumulative-funding total because public figures may overlap and the new package itself blends dilutive and non-dilutive capital.

Distribution Becomes Part of the Product

Notey reports more than 100,000 consumer users and activity in 60 schools across four districts. Those figures come from the company and have not been independently audited. They nevertheless explain why this round is aimed beyond another set of levels or songs: Notey now has to turn initial interest into a repeatable route to learners.

The company's Maltese subsidiary will serve as its European base for product and engineering work, school and conservatory partnerships, publisher and label relationships, and distribution across the European Union. Notey has also announced a distribution partnership with Telemach for Slovenia and the wider Balkans, plus a relationship with EdMusica focused on Latin America.

For a consumer education company, those channels can determine whether product engagement becomes a durable business. A telecom provider can put Notey in front of households without the startup paying to acquire each family separately. Schools and teachers can make the app part of a recurring practice routine rather than a one-time download. Regional partners can help with language, curriculum, and local trust that a mobile listing cannot supply on its own.

What the Capital Is Supposed to Change

Notey is preparing a public launch of WorldBuilder, an AI-native tool designed to let users create their own music-learning game worlds around an adaptive curriculum. The company is also targeting piano, voice, and recorder experiences for release by Q1 2027. Those are forward-looking plans, not delivered milestones, and their value will depend on whether the broader content keeps learners playing real instruments.

The company is also hiring across marketing, engineering, design, and operations in the United States and Malta. The official careers page listed six current openings during this review, providing a concrete signal that the new operating base is more than a mailing address.

Product breadth and geographic reach create their own operating pressure. More instruments require different content, recognition, pedagogy, and feedback. More regions add distribution partners, school relationships, languages, and support demands. WorldBuilder may help expand content supply, but Notey still has to protect the learning quality that makes the game useful rather than merely abundant.

Why This Round Matters

Music-learning apps can make practice more accessible, but access does not guarantee persistence. The harder commercial problem is creating an experience that children choose repeatedly while giving parents and teachers enough evidence of progress to keep supporting it. Notey's real-instrument controller is an unusually direct answer because the game only works when the learner plays.

The $3M package finances the next test of that answer. Tivoli Ventures, Malta Venture Capital, and Malta Enterprise are backing a plan that joins product expansion with a European operating base and partner-led distribution. The company has not yet proved that those channels will produce durable retention, learning outcomes, or attractive economics, and the announcement does not provide the data needed to make that claim.

What Notey has done is make the assignment legible. The instrument must remain the controller, the game must keep the practice moving, and the new distribution system must bring that loop into more homes and classrooms without turning the learning experience into another screen competing for attention.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is Notey's $3M seed package structured?

Notey says the $3M total was led by Tivoli Ventures and co-led by Malta Venture Capital. It includes a $1M non-dilutive development grant from Malta Enterprise, so the full headline amount should not be treated as equity financing.

What does Notey's product do?

Notey turns a real guitar into the controller for a mobile learning game. The app listens through the device microphone, recognizes notes, and uses songs, challenges, and immediate feedback to guide practice.

Why is Notey opening an operation in Malta?

The Maltese subsidiary is intended to serve as Notey's European base for product and engineering work, school and conservatory partnerships, publisher and label relationships, and distribution across the EU.

Which investors backed Notey's seed package?

Tivoli Ventures led the package and Malta Venture Capital co-led it. Malta Enterprise supplied the $1M non-dilutive development grant; a complete investor roster and individual check sizes were not disclosed.

What should operators watch after the Notey funding?

The key questions are whether partner-led distribution produces repeat practice, whether schools and families retain the product, and whether Notey can expand to new instruments without weakening the learning quality of the current experience.
