Workato

Workato is an enterprise software company that connects applications, data, APIs, business processes, and AI agents in a governed orchestration layer. Led by CEO and co-founder Vijay Tella, the Palo Alto company sits at the intersection of integration platform as a service, process automation, and enterprise AI execution.

That position matters now because reasoning is no longer the only constraint on enterprise AI. Models can generate plans quickly, but agents still need permission-aware access to systems, accurate business context, process state, approval logic, and audit trails before they can perform consequential work.

Workato is betting that the integration layer already coordinating enterprise workflows can become the control and execution layer for AI agents. The bet turns a decade of infrastructure into a strategic asset: the systems that already know how work moves through a company may also be the systems best positioned to govern how agents participate in that work.

About Workato

Workato was founded in 2013 by an integration team that included Vijay Tella and Gautham Viswanathan. The company's origin reflected a practical mismatch. Business applications were becoming simpler and more accessible, while the middleware connecting those applications remained technical, expensive, and difficult for business teams to use.

The company built its reputation around low-code enterprise integration and automation. Workato now reports more than 12,000 global customers, connections to more than 14,000 enterprise systems, and adoption by more than half of the Fortune 500. Those company-reported figures describe an installed base large enough to make Workato's move into enterprise AI more than a product-line experiment.

Workato's last publicly verified financing milestone came in November 2021, when the company announced a $200M Series E at a $5.7B valuation. The round, led by Battery Ventures, brought total funding above $420M at the time. No newer authoritative valuation has been disclosed, so that figure should be read as a historical financing event rather than a current valuation.

From Integration to Enterprise AI Execution

The Workato ONE platform now combines several layers that enterprises have traditionally purchased and managed separately. Workato Orchestrate coordinates applications, data, APIs, processes, event streams, and automation. Workato Agentic gives teams a low-code environment for building and operating agents, while Workato Enterprise MCP provides governed access to business context, reusable skills, authenticated actions, and audit trails.

That architecture addresses the least glamorous and most expensive part of enterprise AI: execution. A model can propose a customer refund, vendor change, access request, or financial workflow, but a production system must still determine who can approve the action, which data may be exposed, what sequence the process follows, and how every step is recorded. Enterprise software has spent decades accumulating those rules, usually across systems that were never designed to work together gracefully.

Workato Enterprise MCP is designed to make that operational layer available to AI agents without giving them uncontrolled access to the business. Its value proposition extends beyond connectors. It combines context, identity, governance, observability, and action, turning integration infrastructure into a production boundary for agentic systems.

The competitive field is crowded, and Workato's leadership claims remain company or analyst assertions rather than independently verified conclusions. Even so, the company's reported customer base and long operating history provide a credible foundation in a market where many agent platforms are still working to move beyond demonstrations into systems of record.

Leadership and Platform Strategy

Workato's current leadership team reflects the company's expansion from automation into AI infrastructure. Vijay Tella remains CEO and co-founder. Adam Seligman serves as CTO, Bhagat Nainani as CPO, and Bhaskar Roy as Chief of AI Products, giving platform architecture, product development, and agentic offerings distinct executive leadership.

The product strategy has also evolved through acquisitions and ecosystem expansion. Workato acquired DeepConverse in March 2025 to add AI search and support-automation capabilities. In 2026, the company expanded Workato ONE, Enterprise MCP, Agent Studio, AIRO, agent orchestration, and the Workato AI Marketplace.

Together, those moves describe a company trying to own more of the distance between an AI model's intent and a completed business outcome. The integration layer provides connectivity, the orchestration layer manages process, and the agentic layer introduces a new interface for initiating and coordinating work. The governance layer determines whether large enterprises trust the entire system.

Why Workato's Hiring Momentum Matters

Workato's careers page spans AI, developer products, product and engineering, customer success, operations, and go-to-market roles across multiple regions. The number of openings changes over time, making the hiring pattern more meaningful than any specific count. Workato is investing in both the technical construction of agentic products and the deployment, support, and commercial execution needed to bring those products into large organizations.

The company's operating principles include prioritizing customers, winning together, acting now, thinking ahead, bettering each other, going offbeat, and having fun. Those principles matter only if they survive the realities of enterprise execution, where even an excellent product must satisfy security teams, process owners, developers, operators, and finance leaders simultaneously.

For builders, the hiring pattern suggests that enterprise AI is becoming an infrastructure discipline rather than a prompt-engineering exercise. Forward-deployed engineers, AI researchers, developer advocates, product managers, and customer-facing technical teams are all essential when agents must operate across legacy systems, modern SaaS platforms, and highly specific organizational rules.

What Workato Signals for Enterprise Software

The next stage of enterprise AI will be judged less by what an agent can say and more by what it can safely complete. Useful agents require current context, controlled access, reliable workflows, human approvals, and visible accountability. Those requirements favor platforms that already understand how data and work move across enterprise systems.

Workato's thesis is that integration infrastructure can become agent infrastructure. If that thesis proves correct, the company will not need to win every model or application layer. Instead, it can become the neutral execution fabric that allows different models, agents, people, and systems to coordinate without turning the enterprise into a permissionless science fair.

That is why Workato matters beyond the iPaaS category. The company is testing whether the middleware of the SaaS era can become the control plane of the agentic era, while its financing history, customer reach, product expansion, leadership structure, and hiring footprint provide useful signals for enterprise operators and investors to watch.
