Stoke Space Closes Initial $1B Series E for Nova

Stoke Space completed the initial close of a $1B Series E on September 8, 2026, giving the Kent, Washington rocket company capital for 2 overlapping jobs. It is preparing Nova Pathfinder for a first orbital flight targeted for early 2027 while accelerating Nova Block 2, a larger fully reusable vehicle targeted for 2029.

Point72 Ventures and Spark Capital co-led the round. General Innovation, Glade Brook Capital, US Innovation Technology, Washington Harbour Partners, Woven Capital, Y Combinator, and other new and existing investors participated. Stoke reports $2.3B in total capital raised, although the company called the transaction an initial closing rather than a final close.

The financing matters because a reusable rocket is only one piece of a reusable launch business. Stoke must prove the vehicle in flight, then make manufacturing, testing, pad operations, recovery, refurbishment, and customer scheduling work often enough to create the availability that full reuse is supposed to unlock.

What Stoke Space Announced

The official Series E announcement says the financing will advance Stoke's core reuse technologies and expand manufacturing, test, launch, and recovery infrastructure. It will also support production and launch capacity while accelerating development of Nova Block 2. CEO and co-founder Andy Lapsa described the capital as a way to scale toward the capability and cadence customers require.

Stoke did not disclose the financing terms or an official valuation. Reuters reported that the Series E values Stoke at roughly $10B, citing a person familiar with the matter. Bloomberg had reported in August that the company was seeking $1B at roughly a $9B pre-money valuation, which is broadly consistent with the Reuters figure, but both remain reported estimates rather than company-confirmed terms.

The capital figure also needs careful accounting. Stoke announced a $260M Series C in January 2025, then a Series D that began at $510M in October 2025 and was extended to $860M in February 2026. That earlier financing included a separately described $100M debt facility. The $2.3B figure is therefore best understood as Stoke's company-reported total capital raised, not a reconstructed total of disclosed equity alone.

Pathfinder Has to Turn Architecture Into Evidence

Andy Lapsa and CTO Tom Feldman founded Stoke in 2019 after working at Blue Origin. Their thesis was that launch transportation eventually had to become fully and rapidly reusable, with both stages returning rather than discarding the upper stage after every mission. Nova Pathfinder is the first orbital configuration built to test that thesis as a system.

Pathfinder uses 7 Zenith engines on its first stage. Zenith is a full-flow staged-combustion engine fueled by liquefied natural gas and liquid oxygen, an architecture Stoke selected to combine performance with lower thermal and mechanical stress across repeated flights. The upper stage uses an Andromeda engine integrated with an actively cooled metallic heat shield, circulating cryogenic propellant through the shield to absorb reentry heat.

Stoke has completed engine, structural, and subscale flight work, including a vertical takeoff and landing test of a reusable upper-stage prototype in 2023. The company is now integrating and qualifying the orbital vehicle, with first flight targeted for early 2027. Pathfinder is expected to carry customer payloads and build operating experience, while GeekWire reports that AstroForge is scheduled to fly on the first mission.

Those milestones are meaningful, but orbital recovery and rapid reflight remain ahead. The Series E gives Stoke more room to finish qualification and prepare the launch system; it does not convert future flight targets into completed performance.

Nova Block 2 Turns Learning Into Capacity

Stoke is developing Nova Block 2 in parallel with Pathfinder. The company says Block 2 will deliver 15 metric tons to low Earth orbit in a fully reusable configuration with a 5-meter fairing, a fivefold increase over Pathfinder's reported 3-metric-ton LEO capacity. Its first launch is targeted for 2029.

The relationship between the vehicles is more important than the size difference. Pathfinder is planned with 7 Zenith engines; Block 2 is planned with 14. Both vehicles use stainless-steel skin-and-stringer structures and share propulsion, manufacturing, reentry, and operating principles, allowing work completed for Pathfinder to feed a larger production system rather than ending with one demonstration vehicle.

That choice turns the Series E into a bet on concurrency. Stoke is funding the vehicle that must prove the architecture and the larger vehicle intended to serve higher-capacity missions before the first orbital result arrives. Waiting would reduce technical risk before scale spending, but it could also leave factories, launch sites, recovery systems, and customer capacity years behind the demand Stoke says it sees.

Why Launch Availability Is Driving the Roadmap

Stoke argues that commercial constellation operators and national-security programs need more independent launch capacity, larger payload classes, and greater control over schedule and destination. Constellations do not launch once; they require deployment, replenishment, and replacement across multiple orbital planes. A 15-metric-ton fully reusable vehicle is Stoke's answer to that operating pattern.

The company has also built relationships across civil and defense space. Stoke was selected for the U.S. Space Force's National Security Space Launch Phase 3 Lane 1 program, and it cites support from NASA, the Space Force, the Defense Innovation Unit, and the National Science Foundation. The full NSSL program ceiling should not be confused with a contract value awarded to Stoke, but the selection gives the company a path to compete for national-security launch work.

Competition will be unforgiving. SpaceX operates the partially reusable Falcon 9 while developing the fully reusable Starship system; Rocket Lab, Relativity Space, Firefly Aerospace, and other providers are pursuing additional capacity. Stoke's distinction is its decision to design both stages for reuse from the beginning and transfer that architecture from Pathfinder into Block 2.

What the $1B Series E Must Accomplish

For Stoke, the next proof is not another funding total. It is the handoff from qualification to orbital flight, from one flight to recovery, and from recovered hardware to repeatable operations. Each step tests a different part of the economic argument behind full reuse.

Investors are financing that sequence before the market can see the final answer. Point72 Ventures and Spark Capital are backing a company that has accumulated substantial technical evidence but has not yet completed an orbital launch. The round creates the capacity to work on flight readiness, production, infrastructure, and a larger vehicle at the same time, while concentrating more capital behind schedules that can still move.

Stoke now has 2 clocks running inside one program. Pathfinder must turn the architecture into flight evidence, and Block 2 must turn that evidence into enough capacity for larger constellation and national-security missions. The Series E can keep both programs moving together; the company's operating future depends on whether the learning travels as cleanly as the hardware design intends.
