Radical Ventures Reaches $1B+ Breakouts Fund First Close

A country can produce globally important artificial-intelligence companies and still lose much of the private-market ownership created during their most expensive years. Radical Ventures is trying to change that capital handoff with a new fund built for the rounds that arrive after early conviction becomes costly.

The Toronto-founded AI investment firm announced the first close of the Radical Breakouts Fund on September 15, 2026, with well over $1B in commitments. The global late-stage strategy is backed by PSP Investments, CPP Investments, HOOPP, TD Bank Group, BMO Financial Group, CI Global Asset Management, OPTrust, and other undisclosed investors. Radical describes the vehicle as the largest venture-capital fund in Canadian history and says it is already investing in Discovery Loop, Etched, and Crusoe.

What Radical Ventures Announced

The disclosed amount is a first close, not a completed fundraise. Radical did not publish the exact commitment total above $1B, a numeric final target, a final-close timetable, individual limited-partner allocations, fee terms, a check-size range, or a reserve policy. The firm calls the Breakouts Fund “multi-billion-dollar,” which establishes its intended scale without supplying a final number.

That accounting boundary matters in venture-fund coverage. Commitments are capital promised to the fund, typically called over time, rather than money already deployed into portfolio companies. The separate Government of Canada announcement said Radical would invest and mobilise $4B through the Breakouts Fund, but it did not identify $4B as the vehicle's first-close amount or a disclosed final target.

Why Radical Built a Late-Stage AI Fund

Radical's argument begins with company lifecycles. Technology businesses are remaining private longer, raising successive large rounds and reaching public markets at valuations that once would have belonged to mature listed companies. A specialist investor can help create a company and still lack the capital to maintain ownership when later rounds require checks measured in hundreds of millions or billions.

The firm's account of the Breakouts strategy says it has been building toward this moment since its first institutional fund in 2019. Radical helped launch Cohere, Waabi, and World Labs and has invested across companies including Discovery Loop, Etched, Crusoe, Generalist, Prime Intellect, Decart, Latent Labs, Veeda, Xanadu, Muon Space, and Aspect Biosystems. Breakouts gives the manager more capacity to follow those relationships through growth and pre-IPO financing instead of handing the later ownership opportunity entirely to larger pools.

The Institutions Behind the First Close

The named backers connect the strategy to Canadian retirement and financial institutions. PSP Investments, CPP Investments, HOOPP, TD Bank Group, BMO Financial Group, CI Global Asset Management, and OPTrust all participated, although Radical did not disclose what each institution committed.

Several of those relationships predate Breakouts. PSP Investments described itself as an anchor investor since Radical's first institutional fund, while CPP Investments said its relationship with the manager began in 2019. BMO's own release framed its commitment around giving high-growth AI companies capital to commercialize technology and expand globally.

Who Is Leading Radical Ventures

Jordan Jacobs is Radical Ventures' Co-Founder and Managing Partner, and Tomi Poutanen is Co-Founder and Partner. Before Radical, the pair co-founded Layer 6 AI, which TD Bank Group acquired in 2018, and both later held AI leadership roles at the bank. They were also involved in establishing Toronto's Vector Institute, giving the firm ties across research, company formation, corporate AI, and institutional capital.

Radical currently lists offices in Toronto, San Francisco, London, and New York. That footprint fits a fund whose political and institutional significance is Canadian while its investment mandate is global. Breakouts is not designed only to keep Canadian companies Canadian; it is designed to let a Canadian manager and its backers compete for ownership in leading AI companies wherever those companies are built.

What the First Close Changes

For founders, the practical change is continuity. A specialist investor that understands the company at formation can remain relevant when infrastructure costs, international expansion, acquisitions, and later-stage hiring change the financing requirement. Discovery Loop, Etched, and Crusoe are the first disclosed examples of Breakouts capital moving into that later part of the lifecycle.

For limited partners, the proposition is exposure to private AI value creation through a focused manager with an existing company network. The risk also moves with the scale: later rounds bring higher prices, larger commitments, concentrated outcomes, and less room for an attractive story to compensate for weak ownership economics. The first close gives Radical the capital to compete, while the undisclosed portfolio construction and fund terms leave important questions for LP diligence.

The Capital Handoff Moves Downstream

Canada's AI ecosystem has spent years building research institutions, technical talent, and venture-backed companies. The Breakouts Fund shifts attention toward who owns the next chapter, when promising technology becomes a capital-intensive operating business and the rounds become too large for many early investors to follow.

Well over $1B in first-close commitments gives Radical a materially larger seat in those decisions. The record will be built company by company, as Breakouts decides where specialist access still creates an edge, how much ownership that edge can buy, and whether Canadian institutional capital can remain present through the private years when an AI company becomes a global business.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Radical Breakouts Fund?

The Radical Breakouts Fund is Radical Ventures' global late-stage strategy for backing AI scale-ups through larger private rounds and toward pre-IPO scale. Radical says it is designed for a market in which technology companies remain private longer and create more value before listing.

How much did Radical Ventures raise at the first close?

Radical Ventures disclosed well over $1B in commitments at the first close announced on September 15, 2026. The firm did not publish the exact total above $1B, a numeric final target, or a final-close timetable.

Who invested in the Radical Breakouts Fund?

Named backers include PSP Investments, CPP Investments, HOOPP, TD Bank Group, BMO Financial Group, CI Global Asset Management, and OPTrust, alongside other undisclosed global investors. Radical did not disclose the size of each institution's commitment.

Why does the Breakouts Fund matter to Canada's AI ecosystem?

Canada has produced important AI research, founders, and companies, but its scale-ups have often relied on larger foreign pools for later private rounds. Breakouts gives a Canadian manager and Canadian institutions more capacity to remain invested as those financing requirements grow, while the fund's mandate remains global.

Which companies has the Breakouts Fund already backed?

Radical Ventures says the Breakouts Fund is already investing in Discovery Loop, Etched, and Crusoe. The announcement did not disclose investment sizes, ownership percentages, or the fund's broader portfolio-construction targets.
