Connect Ventures Reaches $55M First Close for Fund V

GP-only is a short description of an investment team with a long implication for a founder: the person hearing the pitch is also responsible for the capital decision. Connect Ventures is preserving that arrangement as its fifth fund begins with a $55M first close, announced on September 23, 2026, against an $80M target.

The London venture firm plans to lead European pre-seed rounds with $500K–$5M checks, concentrating on founders whose technical expertise is central to what they are building. British Business Bank anchors Fund V, with returning limited partners Aldea Ventures, Sella Venture Partners and Molten Ventures. AI, infrastructure, hardware, robotics and biotech are among the areas the firm identifies in its Fund V announcement.

For a technical team choosing its first institutional investor, the announcement gives substance to a practical question: who will understand the difficult part of the product and remain accountable for backing it? Connect's answer depends on a small group of partners staying involved as the companies they select become more demanding businesses.

What the Fund V first close establishes

Connect Ventures has secured $55M toward its $80M Fund V ambition. Tech.eu's September 23 report corroborates the amount, first-close status and named LPs. The announcement describes an initial close, with the larger figure remaining a fundraising target; it gives no timetable for completing the balance.

The LP group combines a British Business Bank anchor with returning investors and new European family offices, alongside founders of companies Connect previously backed. The disclosed list describes who is supporting the vehicle without revealing each participant's commitment. It also offers a view of the relationships around the manager: institutional fund investors and people who have experienced venture backing from inside an operating company.

Founder participation brings a second capital-allocation decision into the partnership. A founder who becomes an LP is choosing the manager's judgment across future companies, after having seen some part of that judgment applied to their own business. It is a different decision from accepting a startup investment, with a different exposure to how the partners select and support teams.

The announcement supplies no audited performance figures, fund economics or comprehensive deployment schedule. Those omissions leave the first close useful as evidence of financing for a specific strategy, while leaving prospective LPs and founders with their own diligence to complete.

A technical founder still needs a business

Connect's sharper emphasis is on technical knowledge that shapes the company from its earliest days. Its current portfolio spans ai-coustics, Mosaico and Molecular Glue Labs, alongside businesses including Aikido Security and TrueLayer. These examples illustrate the breadth of the firm's interest; the announcement does not establish that every recent investment belongs to Fund V.

There is an operating reason to examine technical depth before a business has much customer evidence. A founding team's experience can inform which problems are feasible to solve, where a design will fail and what must be built before a buyer can use it. That experience can be difficult to capture in a pitch deck, particularly when the investor's decision depends on understanding choices still being made inside the product.

The commercial question arrives alongside the engineering question. A technically distinctive system needs an identifiable customer, a useful application and an explanation of why the customer should change how they work. Connect's mandate creates room to evaluate those questions early, when a founder's understanding of the problem is carrying more of the argument than a mature revenue history could.

For founders, the $500K–$5M planned investment range frames the scale of conversation the manager is seeking. It spans different initial financing needs without specifying a standard offer or guaranteeing a check. The consequential work is connecting the team's technical insight to the business an investment partner believes it can become.

The people behind the investment decision

Pietro Bezza and Sitar Teli are Connect's Managing Partners, working alongside General Partner Rory Stirling. Bezza's official biography describes a founder's background in mobile communications before venture investing. Teli brings early-stage investing experience from Doughty Hanson Technology Ventures, while Stirling previously worked at BGF Ventures and MMC Ventures.

The firm's history also has a distinction worth preserving. Contemporary launch-period reporting identified Bezza and Bill Earner as the original partners, with Teli joining in 2012. Earner is a historical participant: Companies House records show William Andrew Earner resigned from the LLP in August 2020. The current investment partnership is Bezza, Teli and Stirling.

Connect describes a decision structure in which founders work directly with the partner leading their investment, and that partner remains close as the company grows. The model concentrates responsibility in someone who can carry the company's technical and commercial argument through successive decisions. A founder can evaluate that continuity alongside the financing terms: which partner will stay involved when the product or the financing plan has to change.

It also places a practical limit on the manager. Partner attention has to cover new opportunities and companies already backed. A low-volume strategy makes that allocation of time part of the fund's design, with the quality of each ongoing relationship increasingly consequential as a portfolio develops.

A familiar fund size, a sharper selection process

Connect's $80M Fund III final close was announced in June 2020. In September 2023, the firm announced Fund IV at $80M; the British Business Bank's contemporaneous account made clear that a final close was still to come. Fund V's target therefore matches a previously announced vehicle size while giving the manager a more explicit technical-founder emphasis.

The history matters because fund size and investment approach can move independently. Connect can sharpen the kinds of founding expertise it wants to finance while keeping a familiar capital ambition and partner-led model. For an operator trying to understand the announcement, that selection emphasis is more informative than treating every new vehicle as an expansion in the manager's scale.

Earlier Connect language emphasized product-led companies and distribution advantages. Fund V places technical insight closer to the center of the founder assessment. The two ideas can coexist: the person who understands how to build something difficult still has to understand who will use it, and the investor still has to judge both parts of that proposition.

Connect's first close now supports another set of those conversations across Europe. The founder arriving with an engineering problem will be talking to a partner whose commitment continues into product decisions, hiring pressures and future financing. As those companies develop, the promise made by a GP-only team will have to remain recognizable in the time and judgment that each partner brings to the relationship.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a first close mean for Connect Fund V’s $80M target?

Connect Ventures announced $55M in its first close, while $80M remains the target for Fund V. The announcement does not give a final-close timetable or individual LP commitment amounts.

Which founders fit Connect Fund V’s stated investment approach?

The fund plans to lead European pre-seed rounds with $500K–$5M checks, emphasizing teams whose technical knowledge is central to their products. The named areas include AI, infrastructure, hardware, robotics and biotech; an individual investment still depends on the manager’s selection process.

How does Connect’s GP-only investment team affect the founder relationship?

Connect says each founder works directly with the partner leading the investment, who remains involved as the company grows. That concentrates the financing decision and continuing company support in the same relationship, within the firm’s low-volume investment model.

How does Fund V compare with Connect’s previous vehicles?

Fund V targets $80M, matching the amount announced for Fund IV in September 2023 and the final close of Fund III in June 2020. Its current announcement emphasizes technical founders; the earlier Fund IV announcement emphasized product-led companies and distribution advantages.

What can readers infer from the named Fund V limited partners?
