Kanahoma Gets Virent Capital Investment for Enrollment

A former university marketing chief is helping a private-equity firm begin its own portfolio. Seth Odell, founder and CEO of San Diego-based Kanahoma, will continue running the higher-education marketing business as Virent Capital makes the company its first platform investment, announced October 27, 2026.

The partnership puts an agency built from the institutional side of marketing into a wider enrollment assignment. Virent Capital plans to support additional capabilities through organic investment and complementary acquisitions, while Kanahoma's management retains meaningful ownership. Financial terms were undisclosed, and Chip Paucek, co-founder and former CEO of 2U, joins the board as Co-Chairman.

The operating question sits inside the college buying the service: how much of the journey from discovering a program to enrolling can an outside partner help connect? Kanahoma's expansion follows that question into strategy, creative work, digital infrastructure and student engagement, where a university must decide how those activities contribute to the class it hopes to recruit. The significance of the investment lies in the wider responsibility Kanahoma intends to carry alongside its institutional customers.

What Virent Capital is financing at Kanahoma

Kanahoma is a services business with an existing institutional customer base. Founded in 2020, the company supports more than 20 institutions and employs nearly 50 full-time staff, according to the investment announcement. Those figures describe the platform Virent is backing; they are company-reported scale measures, with no revenue or enrollment-conversion figures disclosed in the release.

Virent describes a model that adds services around an emerging founder-led business. For Kanahoma, that could mean developing capabilities internally and buying complementary businesses, although the announcement names no add-on target or acquisition timetable. The distinction matters for an institutional buyer evaluating the supplier today: planned service breadth belongs in the conversation alongside the capabilities already available.

Salem Investment Partners supplied debt financing and co-invested, according to the Virent-issued PRNewswire release. The deal therefore includes financing relationships beyond the platform investor, but the announcement gives no split between equity and debt. It also leaves valuation and exact ownership percentages undisclosed, so a venture-style round amount would add precision the evidence does not support.

Founder continuity gives the expansion a recognizable point of responsibility. Odell remains the person leading the business, while Paucek brings experience building university partnerships to the board. The management stake carries that continuity into ownership as the firm takes on a broader brief.

Why enrollment work reaches beyond a campaign

Kanahoma's existing agency model helps explain the direction of travel. Its website describes cross-channel marketing, brand development, creative production and consulting, delivered as an extension of a customer's team. These services can touch several parts of an institution's recruitment effort, even when the supplier's formal assignment begins with marketing.

Expanding that relationship creates practical questions about coordination. A university needs to understand how the program it promotes, the people it reaches and the information it gives prospective students fit together. An agency helping across more of that work must be useful to the people making those decisions inside the institution, including when the answer requires changing the plan rather than buying more media.

Virent Drive, the investor's technology and enablement platform, lists software development, digital strategy, data infrastructure, analytics and AI among its capabilities. These resources provide a possible way to support a broader service model. The announcement does not establish that Kanahoma has launched a new proprietary AI product or connected every customer's systems, and the technology should be evaluated through the work it actually supports.

There is a revealing overlap here: the investor already describes expertise in areas that a marketing agency sells. Making that overlap productive requires deciding which resources strengthen delivery, which add something genuinely missing and how the university experiences the combined service. That is an operating design problem that can continue long after the financing closes.

Higher education's enrollment market needs a closer view

The national enrollment picture resists a simple crisis narrative. The National Student Clearinghouse Research Center's spring 2026 findings show postsecondary enrollment rising 1.0% year over year and undergraduate enrollment increasing 1.3%. Growth was concentrated in public institutions, while private nonprofit and private for-profit four-year enrollment was essentially unchanged.

For an enrollment-services supplier, those differences are commercially significant. A growing national student population does not tell an individual college which programs can attract students, where its recruitment effort is losing people or how to allocate the next campaign budget. Kanahoma's opportunity depends on understanding the circumstances of the institutions buying its services, rather than applying one national diagnosis to every customer.

Other providers are also combining enrollment and digital capabilities. In January 2026, EAB acquired Hybrid, a UK-based higher-education marketing company, describing a combination of enrollment expertise, integrated marketing and broader geographic reach. The transaction offers a concrete comparison for service expansion in this market, without establishing that Kanahoma and EAB have equivalent scale, technology or commercial models.

Together, these records suggest that the boundary around an enrollment supplier's assignment is moving. Institutions can purchase creative, channels and advice separately, or seek a partner that helps connect them. The attraction of a broader relationship comes with a buyer's need to see where responsibility sits when several activities contribute to one enrollment decision.

The founder's next institutional conversation

Odell started Kanahoma with experience of buying and directing marketing from inside higher education. That background gives the company's expansion a specific human starting point: the supplier knows that the institution must keep working after an advertisement is delivered or a website project is complete. The investment asks Kanahoma to extend its usefulness further into that continuing work.

The broader ambition will take shape through the capabilities Kanahoma develops and the responsibilities its university partners choose to share. As Odell brings a larger service proposition back to those institutions, the conversation follows the prospective student further: from finding a program, through getting a useful answer, toward being able to make an enrollment decision.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Kanahoma’s proposed expansion change its agency relationship with universities?

Kanahoma intends to combine its marketing work with broader enrollment services, supported by organic investment and complementary acquisitions. Universities would need to evaluate which responsibilities the partner can connect across strategy, digital delivery and prospective student engagement; the announcement does not establish completed acquisitions or measured new outcomes.

What is known about the financing structure and management continuity?

Virent Capital announced a private-equity platform investment, while Salem Investment Partners provided debt financing and co-invested. Seth Odell remains CEO and management retains meaningful ownership. The financial terms and exact ownership percentages were not disclosed.

Does Virent Drive mean Kanahoma has launched a new AI product?

Virent Drive is the investor’s technology and enablement platform, with capabilities including software development, data infrastructure, analytics and AI. Its involvement supports the expansion plan, but the announcement does not verify a new proprietary Kanahoma AI product or customer-wide deployment.

Why should enrollment buyers distinguish national trends from their own institution’s results?

National Student Clearinghouse data shows undergraduate enrollment grew 1.3% in spring 2026, with gains concentrated in public institutions. Those national figures do not establish the recruitment performance or needs of a particular university, which must assess its own programs, prospective students and enrollment process.
