IBM and a16z Speedrun Put the Next Sports-Tech Interface in Front of the Market
Sports technology has to satisfy two audiences that rarely experience the product the same way. The athlete or fan feels the interface. The league, media company, venue, sponsor, or investor has to understand the system and the economics behind it.
IBM and a16z Speedrun are bringing those layers together Friday morning for the IBM Sports Tech Startup Challenge Showcase. Selected founders will present to IBM Ventures, IBM Sports and Entertainment Partnerships, a16z Speedrun, and other members of the Bay Area sports and venture community. A short fireside conversation on industry trends will lead into the showcase.
The judging panel includes Salim Mitha of Powerhouse Capital, Aadit Parikh of Sony Ventures, and Fareed Mosavat of a16z Speedrun, with Danny Paez of IBM Ventures moderating. That group can examine the same product through different routes to market: institutional partnership, consumer attention, media distribution, strategic value, and the venture case underneath the category.
Startup applications are closed, but attendance remains open on a first-come, first-served basis. The interesting part comes after the pitch, when a sports experience has to leave the showcase and earn its place inside somebody else's season, platform, or business model.
