Waymo Company Spotlight: Work Behind Autonomous Rides

Waymo develops autonomous driving technology and operates a passenger ride-hailing service powered by the Waymo Driver. The California company, led by co-CEOs Tekedra Mawakana and Dmitri Dolgov, brings artificial intelligence, vehicle hardware and fleet operations together around an ordinary customer expectation: getting where you need to go.

Waymo's story began with Google's self-driving project in 2009, years before the company adopted its current name in 2016. It now combines commercial U.S. service with continuing work on the Driver and the organization required to deploy it. Its first $5B term loan, closed in October 2026, adds financial support to that expansion after February's $16B equity round.

The company's current career listings offer another view of the business. A simulator-evaluation role and a depot-automation role, both summer 2027 internships, put technical evaluation and daily fleet readiness on the same map. Autonomous mobility depends on what happens around a vehicle as well as what happens inside it, giving builders and operators a company to study across several disciplines.

How the Waymo Driver becomes a passenger service

The Waymo Driver is the company's integrated autonomous driving system. It combines detailed maps with live sensor observations, identifies surrounding road users, anticipates possible movements and plans how the vehicle should proceed. For the passenger, that sequence becomes a ride rather than a series of engineering decisions.

Waymo's February 2026 sixth-generation account describes cameras, lidar, radar and external audio receivers working alongside onboard computation. Integrated cleaning systems help keep sensors usable, while the architecture is designed for different vehicle platforms. The engineering challenge includes seeing and responding through the conditions a working fleet actually encounters.

Waymo's safety approach includes simulation, closed-course testing, public-road driving and safeguards around critical functions. Those methods describe how the company develops and evaluates the system; they do not make every road situation predictable. A passenger service puts reliability into repeated contact with the outside world.

The Magna integration partnership in Mesa, Arizona makes the physical part visible. Vehicles need the Driver installed, then validated and commissioned before carrying riders. A new software capability and a vehicle ready for service are connected milestones, with manufacturing and fleet staff doing consequential work between them. For companies building physical AI, that relationship helps explain why product development reaches so far beyond the model team.

Leadership, history and the expansion business

Dmitri Dolgov was a founding member of Google's self-driving project and previously served as Waymo's CTO. As co-CEO, his focus includes development and deployment of the Driver. The project's early history also includes Sebastian Thrun, who described the Google team's work in a 2010 announcement; that is historical context rather than a current Waymo role.

Tekedra Mawakana, formerly Waymo's COO, shares the CEO role with a focus on commercialization. Steve Fieler is CFO, bringing experience from Alphabet finance leadership and an earlier CFO role at HP. The executive structure places technical development, commercial deployment and capital planning alongside one another.

February's $16B equity investment valued Waymo at $126B post-money and was led by Dragoneer Investment Group, DST Global and Sequoia Capital, with Alphabet remaining the majority investor. October's separate $5B term loan, covered in DevCuration's financing report, introduced the company's first debt financing. These transactions provide capital context without supplying a public answer to standalone profitability or city-level economics.

Commercial expansion carries local calendars. Waymo began welcoming public riders in Las Vegas in September through a progressive rollout, while its Singapore plan targets commercial service in 2028 after readiness work and regulatory engagement. The leadership job stretches across a service already carrying customers and markets still being prepared. That is a substantial coordination task even when the same Driver sits at the center of the plan.

What Waymo's current roles reveal about the work

Waymo's official careers portal spans software engineering, AI foundations, hardware, operations, product and corporate functions. Two individual listings available when checked on October 8, 2026, make the relationship between technical research and commercial operations unusually concrete. Both concern summer 2027 rather than an immediate 2026 start.

The MS/PhD simulator-evaluation internship in Mountain View involves simulator functionality for model-safety evaluation and metrics infrastructure for simulated data. The listed qualifications include graduate study, Python, SQL and experience with models and evaluation. Another engineer needs to be able to use that work to understand how a driving system behaves.

The BS depot-automation internship in San Francisco concerns real-time telemetry pipelines, dashboards and testing. Its description calls for working with triage engineers and operations staff to gather requirements and iterate on tools. Here, the user of the engineering work is a colleague trying to keep a fleet moving.

These listings reveal specific responsibilities, not a net hiring rate or a promise that the new loan will fund particular jobs. Their value as market intelligence is the connection they expose: simulation supports evaluation, while operational software helps people manage vehicles in service. Builders can read the roles for the kinds of problems Waymo assigns to different teams. Operators can follow how those teams turn technical knowledge into a more usable service.

Culture and community meet the operating task

Waymo's culture materials describe commitments to safety, diversity, innovation, excellence and trust. These are the company's stated principles, rather than an independent assessment of every employee's experience. The collaboration described in the depot role gives one practical example of how specialists are expected to work with colleagues who use their systems.

The company's benefits materials describe health coverage, family support, mentorship, education reimbursement and opportunities to volunteer. Eligibility and offerings vary by role and location, and working arrangements include onsite and hybrid positions. For prospective teammates, the individual role remains the place to confirm the terms that apply to them.

Waymo also links its work to mobility access and sustainability, using electric vehicles and describing renewable energy procurement alongside certificates for remaining gaps. Electric operation addresses one part of transportation's environmental footprint; the wider lifecycle still matters. Community engagement and employee volunteering sit beside the engineering effort as the company operates in more places.

The company is worth following because its product creates dependencies across people who build, test, commission and operate the service. An evaluator's metrics and an operations team's dashboard serve different users, but each can affect whether a vehicle is ready for its next assignment. As more passengers encounter the Waymo Driver, that work continues in the simulator, on the integration line and back at the depot.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Waymo do?

Waymo develops the Waymo Driver, an integrated autonomous driving system, and operates fully autonomous passenger ride-hailing. Its technology combines sensing, perception, prediction and planning with vehicle hardware and fleet operations.

Who leads Waymo?

Tekedra Mawakana and Dmitri Dolgov are Waymo's co-CEOs. Mawakana focuses on commercialization, while Dolgov focuses on development and deployment of the Waymo Driver. Steve Fieler is CFO.

When did Waymo begin?

Waymo began as Google's self-driving project in 2009 and adopted the Waymo identity in 2016. Current co-CEO Dmitri Dolgov was a founding project member. Sebastian Thrun is part of the project's early Google history, not a current executive identified in this profile.

What current Waymo roles illustrate its engineering work?

As checked October 8, 2026, Waymo listed summer 2027 internships in machine-learning simulator evaluation in Mountain View and depot automation in San Francisco. They cover model evaluation and operational tools; two listings do not establish net hiring growth.

Why do simulation and depot operations matter to autonomous ride-hailing?

Simulation supports evaluation of driving models, while depot telemetry and dashboards help operations staff manage vehicles in service. Waymo also validates and commissions vehicles after integrating the Driver. These responsibilities connect autonomous technology to a functioning passenger service.
