Company Spotlight: Walapay’s Global Payments Stack

Walapay is building a global money-movement layer for businesses that need to collect, hold, convert and send funds across fiat currencies, stablecoins and local payment networks. Brothers Tom Borgers and Dimitri Borgers co-founded the company, and Tom Borgers serves as CEO.

The New York-headquartered fintech matters because fast settlement is only one part of an international payment. The receiving side still needs a bank account, local currency, liquidity, compliance review, reconciliation and somebody accountable when the transfer breaks. Walapay is trying to place more of that fragmented work behind one API.

Walapay reports support for more than 60 currencies across 180 countries and $2.5B in annualized payment volume. The company names Kast, Nuvei and Bastion as customers. Those figures are company-reported, but they show why Walapay is now hiring engineers, compliance operators and customer-success staff while expanding licenses and banking partnerships.

About Walapay

Walapay gives businesses and developers a programmable connection to multicurrency accounts, customer collections, foreign exchange, global payouts and treasury operations. The platform combines traditional bank infrastructure with stablecoin rails rather than forcing customers to choose one system or stitch both together themselves.

That distinction defines the product. Stablecoins can move value between institutions quickly, but they do not automatically provide a local bank account, a payout connection, compliant customer onboarding or liquidity in the destination currency. Walapay treats stablecoins as one route inside a larger payment stack.

Walapay's developer documentation describes APIs for onboarding customers, creating virtual bank accounts and digital-asset wallets, moving funds across bank transfers, e-wallets and stablecoins, and managing permissions around account activity. Country and rail documentation adds direction, timing and limit details by market.

The Product Is the Handoff

International payments tend to become expensive where one system hands the transaction to another. Walapay says a cross-border payment may pass through 4 or 5 banks and payment service providers before settlement. Every connection can add a fee, a delay, a reconciliation problem or a support queue.

Walapay's strategic bet is that controlling more licensing, banking and liquidity relationships can reduce those handoffs. Locally domiciled virtual accounts let a platform collect money closer to where its customers operate. Local payout rails can deliver the destination currency without routing every transaction through the same correspondent path. Stablecoins can accelerate movement between the endpoints when that rail fits the use case.

The API does not make regulation disappear. It organizes the controls around the movement. Walapay describes KYC, KYB, sanctions screening and transaction monitoring as part of the platform. Its documentation also supports role-based approval controls so one user can create a payment while another approves it. That is mundane architecture with serious consequences when a platform is moving customer money.

Founders Built Around the Friction

Tom Borgers and Dimitri Borgers have described the company as an answer to international money problems they experienced while living and working across markets. The founders explored crypto products and wallets before concluding that a cleaner interface could not fix fragmented infrastructure underneath the transaction.

FGV Capital's company profile says Walapay launched in October 2024. By March 2025, the investor reported more than $85M in monthly transaction volume and more than 40 business customers. The profile connects Tom Borgers to prior fintech and payment work and Dimitri Borgers to banking and payment-technology experience at Oliver Wyman and Capital One.

The current leadership evidence is narrower than many startup databases imply. Tom Borgers is verified as co-founder and CEO. Dimitri Borgers is verified as co-founder, but the available first-party material does not establish a current executive title with the same confidence. That distinction matters because company spotlights should explain the operators without turning an old profile into a current org chart.

Traction and Capital

Walapay's October 2026 funding announcement reports $2.5B in annualized total payment volume and identifies Kast, Nuvei and Bastion as customers. Tom Borgers separately said the infrastructure serves more than 100,000 customers, although the public statement does not define how that broader count is measured.

Generative Ventures led the $4.6M Seed. Commerce Ventures, Polygon, Verda Ventures, NGC Ventures, FGV Capital, AAF, Jsquare, Knollwood, Big Brain Holdings and others participated. Investors are backing a company whose defensibility may come less from a visible interface than from a growing network of licenses, partner banks, liquidity routes and operating knowledge.

Walapay did not disclose revenue, profitability, valuation, ownership terms or total funding. The company also does not claim that every listed market has an identical product or regulatory structure. Coverage depends on specific rails, directions, limits and partner arrangements.

Why Walapay Is Hiring Now

Tom Borgers has publicly named open staff-engineering, compliance and customer-success roles. A current listing also describes a remote BSA/AML analyst position responsible for screening, transaction-monitoring investigations and customer-risk operations.

The mix says more than a generic hiring page. Staff engineers build and maintain bank and payment integrations. Compliance operators keep onboarding and transaction controls defensible. Customer-success teams handle the corridor-specific exceptions that APIs cannot wish away. Walapay is hiring for the connective tissue between a technical promise and regulated financial operations.

There is no verified careers page on Walapay's domain, so DevCuration is not presenting an evergreen recruiting link. Current candidates should use the company's verified LinkedIn page and confirm each opening directly before applying.

What Walapay Signals for Fintech

The global-payments market is moving toward hybrid infrastructure. Bank rails remain essential for accounts, compliance and local currency. Stablecoins add another settlement option. Software companies increasingly want both through one operational layer rather than separate products with separate ledgers and support teams.

Walapay's opportunity is to make that hybrid model feel like one system. Its risk is the same thing that can make the platform valuable: each new country, currency and bank relationship creates another dependency to monitor. Scale is not merely a map filling with colors. It is the ability to preserve controls, liquidity and service quality as the map becomes operational.

The company is therefore worth watching beyond its Seed round. Walapay is testing whether a relatively small team can turn a patchwork of local financial systems into infrastructure that developers can consume without losing the local accountability those systems still demand.
