Mona Builds an AI Capital System for Small Businesses

Mona is building an AI-powered capital-navigation and financial-coaching platform for small businesses. The San Francisco company helps owners find grants, loans, and government programs, prepare applications, and make financing decisions with support from human coaches.

Co-founders Andrew Leon Hanna, CEO, and Anny Dow, CPO, built Mona around an uncomfortable market fact: the smallest companies often face the most consequential financial choices with the thinnest advisory bench. Mona matters now because the company is trying to turn a fragmented funding search into an ongoing operating system for capital decisions.

The broader signal extends beyond one fintech. AI can reduce discovery and application work, but financial judgment still carries human consequences. Mona's model tests whether software and coaching can scale together without turning advice into another impersonal referral funnel.

About Mona

Mona describes itself as an AI-native financial operating system for small and midsize businesses. A business owner provides information about the company and its capital needs. Mona searches across grants, loans, and government funding programs, produces a customized funding report, supports application preparation, and continues coaching after the first match.

That last part matters. Capital discovery is a search problem. Capital selection is a business-model problem. A loan can solve an inventory gap and create a cash-flow burden. A grant can be attractive and still consume weeks of application time. A government program can be affordable and difficult to find before its deadline. Mona is designed to keep the owner from handling every tradeoff alone.

The company draws a clear legal line around the product: Mona is not a lender, creditor, or broker. It helps businesses navigate possible sources of capital and provides application and coaching support.

From a Common Application to a Capital Platform

Harvard Innovation Labs traces Mona's current direction to Hanna's work with entrepreneurs through DreamxAmerica. The company first operated as a corporate-gifting platform that bought products from small businesses. Hanna's experience helping Avanti Coffee Company secure microloans exposed a different constraint. Useful capital existed, but the business owner needed help finding and navigating it.

Mona tested a common application in 2024. Hundreds of submissions arrived without intentional marketing, according to Hanna. The team rebuilt the product in 2025 around AI-assisted matching, a more structured intake, community partnerships, and ongoing coaching.

Dow's background helped shape that transition. Before Mona, she worked on product and coaching systems at Headspace. Hanna's experience spans entrepreneurship, finance, law, and storytelling. The founders' combined operating thesis is visible in the product: automate the repetitive work, keep people close to the decisions that can change a business.

Why Small-Business Capital Navigation Is Still Broken

Small-business finance is not one market with one front door. It runs through banks, community development financial institutions, grant programs, local governments, nonprofit intermediaries, and online lenders. Owners have to search across those systems while running the business the money is supposed to support.

The Federal Reserve's 2026 Small Business Credit Survey found that 60% of employer firms sought financing in the prior 12 months. Among applicants, 42% received all the financing requested, 36% received some or most, and 22% received none. Operating expenses and expansion were the most common reasons to seek money.

Those numbers describe more than a supply problem. They describe an information and decision problem. The business owner has to locate an opportunity, understand the terms, prepare the documents, and decide whether the funding fits the company's margins, timing, and risk tolerance. Mona is betting that this decision layer deserves its own product category.

How Mona Combines AI With Human Coaching

Mona uses software to identify relevant funding opportunities and reduce repeated application work. Its Growth Assistant continues monitoring programs, while expert support helps businesses prepare applications and think through strategy. The company also provides coaching and workshops intended to make the relationship useful beyond a single transaction.

The hybrid design is the strategic edge. AI can search a broad opportunity set and personalize a shortlist. A human coach can ask whether a cheaper product arrives too late, whether repayment fits seasonal cash flow, or whether an owner should wait rather than accept capital with the wrong terms.

Mastercard Strive is helping Mona take that model into community development financial institutions and business-support organizations. The program begins with pilots in Chicago's South Side and has forward-looking goals of coaching more than 5,000 businesses and matching more than 1,000 with funding opportunities. Those are targets, not completed results, but they show how Mona plans to distribute the product through institutions entrepreneurs already know.

Traction, Recognition, and the Next Test

Harvard Innovation Labs reported in January 2026 that Mona had helped small businesses access more than $1 million in affordable capital. Mona later said it had supported thousands of businesses and helped secure millions across markets including Chicago, Detroit, Jacksonville, New York City, and San Francisco. These figures are reported by the company and its institutional partners rather than audited financial statements.

Mona was recognized in Fast Company's 2026 World Changing Ideas program and the 2025 Inc. Power Partner Awards. It has also participated in Techstars NYC Economic Mobility, Google Startups for Sustainable Development, and Harvard Launch Lab X. The common thread is not prestige collecting. It is access to distribution, technical support, and small-business networks.

On September 28, 2026, Mona announced an oversubscribed $3.5 million financing led by Sandberg Bernthal Venture Partners. The company said the capital will expand its AI platform and financial-coaching reach. Mona did not disclose a round stage, valuation, or detailed hiring plan.

What Mona Signals for Financial Technology

The next fintech category may not be another place to buy money. It may be the layer that helps a business decide which money to pursue, what to avoid, and when to act.

Mona's challenge is to make that guidance repeatable across different cities, industries, institutions, and business conditions. A matching engine can scale quickly. Trust does not. The company will have to prove that its coaching quality, opportunity data, and recommendations remain useful as volume grows.

That tension is exactly why Mona is worth watching. Small businesses do not need a longer list of funding links. They need less wasted motion and better decisions. Mona is building software for the search while keeping people accountable to the consequences.
