Symmetric Builds Healthcare’s Product Data Layer

Hospitals make expensive clinical and financial decisions through product records that can change every day. A device identifier, packaging hierarchy, reimbursement code, contract price, recall notice, supplier relationship, or substitute may look like another field in a database until someone in an operating room, loading dock, procurement office, or revenue team needs it to be correct.

Symmetric Health Solutions builds and maintains that product-data foundation for hospitals and health systems. The Pittsburgh healthcare information technology company was founded in 2018 by Rich Kucera, Tomás (TJ) Dardet Preston, Jon Boerner, and Ryan Kissell. Kucera serves as CEO, while the current company leadership page places Dardet Preston in solutions, Kissell in operations, and Boerner in product leadership.

Symmetric matters now because hospital supply chains are being asked to handle more volatility, automation, and financial pressure without a stable product identity underneath every system. The company connects item, contract, supplier, clinical, and regulatory data across ERP, EHR, purchasing, point-of-use, analytics, and finance workflows, giving operators a maintained record rather than another one-time cleanup.

About Symmetric Health Solutions

Symmetric's mission is to make global clinical supply-chain data transparent, trustworthy, and usable for every healthcare organization. Kucera and Dardet Preston encountered the item-data problem while working as healthcare supply-chain consultants at Accenture, then joined fellow Carnegie Mellon alumni Boerner and Kissell to build a healthcare-specific solution.

The company spent its first 8 years bootstrapped and profitable. In October 2026, Spectrum Equity made an undisclosed strategic growth investment, becoming Symmetric's first institutional investor. The financing supports product development, go-to-market, customer success, and hiring, but the company's core identity was established before the capital arrived: a maintained data layer built around healthcare supply-chain complexity.

The Problem Symmetric Is Solving

A hospital item master can contain more than 500,000 rows. Each record may carry identifiers, classifications, packaging, manufacturer and supplier details, clinical attributes, reimbursement codes, contract information, pricing, and links to substitute products. The same item may be described differently by manufacturers, distributors, group purchasing organizations, and hospital systems.

Those records also decay. Spectrum Equity says roughly 30% of a hospital's item master can turn over in a year as products launch or disappear, packaging changes, reimbursement codes move, and contracts accumulate amendments. A static cleanup can improve the file today while leaving the organization with the same maintenance problem tomorrow.

When the data is wrong, the consequences spread. A used implant may lack the billing code required for reimbursement. Duplicate item numbers can fragment purchasing volume and hide contract tiers. A recall may not map to the inventory record. A shortage may force teams to search manually for a clinically acceptable substitute.

How the Symmetric Platform Works

Symmetric reconciles data from regulatory registries, manufacturer catalogs, GPO contracts, distributors, and other sources into continuously maintained product records. The platform covers GTIN and UDI identifiers, UNSPSC, HCPCS, GMDN, descriptions, packaging, manufacturer and supplier lineage, clinical flags, country of origin, tariff exposure, product images, and substitute relationships.

The company says its database contains nearly 20 million healthcare items, as many as 1,800 attributes per item, and 5 million verified substitutes. More than 45 health systems contribute verification, according to the investment announcement, while Symmetric reports a 96% average match rate and 98% customer retention since founding. The company website separately says the platform supports more than 1,200 hospitals. These are company and investor-reported metrics, not independently audited results.

Symmetric advertises cloud integrations for Workday, Oracle, and Infor environments, alongside support for other ERP, EHR, GPO, point-of-use, analytics, and custom-feed workflows. The practical advantage is placement: maintained product data can improve the systems teams already use instead of forcing every function into a separate interface.

Where Symmetric Creates Value

The platform supports master-data management, sourcing and procurement, spend analysis, value analysis, contract management, warehousing, point-of-use scanning, resiliency, revenue integrity, analytics, and data feeds. Symmetric also tracks country-of-origin and tariff information, which can help supply-chain teams understand exposure before a price change or geopolitical disruption reaches the purchasing queue.

The company describes one academic health system project that produced 98,085 GTIN updates, 60,751 HCPCS additions, 40,918 description updates, and 2,747 duplicate resolutions in 60 days during simultaneous ERP and point-of-use preparation. That example is company-reported, but it shows the volume of corrections required before a new system can inherit a usable item master.

Symmetric also joined the Healthcare Industry Resilience Collaborative in 2026. The relationship fits the company's broader thesis that resilient supply chains require shared standards and trusted product identities across providers, suppliers, manufacturers, and technology platforms.

Leadership and Operating Judgment

The founders built Symmetric around experience with the operational consequences of bad healthcare data. The current leadership structure spans growth, solutions, operations, product, and UDI regulation, reflecting a company that must combine software, clinical and regulatory context, hospital implementation, and customer support.

That combination is part of the competitive moat. A general master-data platform can store fields and rules, but healthcare item data requires product identifiers, clinical attributes, reimbursement logic, substitutes, regulatory sources, packaging hierarchies, and integrations that match how hospitals actually buy, use, scan, bill, and recall supplies.

Why Symmetric's Hiring Matters

Symmetric's careers page currently lists roles in implementation, customer success, product support, integrations engineering, data engineering, application engineering, engineering management, and people operations. The spread is more informative than a generic growth claim because it shows the company expanding both product development and the teams responsible for deployment and customer outcomes.

Healthcare data infrastructure does not scale through code alone. Every new health system brings its own item master, systems, contracts, governance, and operating constraints. Hiring across engineering and customer execution suggests Symmetric is preparing to carry a larger installed base without treating implementation as an afterthought.

What Symmetric Signals for Healthcare IT

Hospitals are investing in AI, automation, resiliency, and modern ERP systems, but each layer depends on accurate product identity. A forecasting model cannot find a substitute it cannot recognize. An agent cannot protect contract economics when the item, supplier, package, and price do not align. A recall workflow cannot move faster than the record connecting the notice to the shelf.

Symmetric's opportunity sits inside that dependency. The company is building infrastructure that is easiest to overlook when it works and hardest to replace once purchasing, clinical, financial, and analytical workflows trust it. Its next phase will be measured by whether the company can maintain that trust as more hospitals, products, contracts, and automated decisions pass through the data it keeps current.
