Reverion Makes One Power Plant Work in Both Directions

Reverion is building a power plant that refuses to choose one direction.

When electricity is scarce, its containerized system converts gas into power. When renewable generation is abundant, the same core equipment reverses and converts electricity into storable methane or hydrogen. The commercial argument is not simply higher efficiency. It is that one machine can serve two different grid needs instead of sitting idle when market conditions flip.

The German climate-tech company grew from research at the Technical University of Munich and was incorporated in 2022. CEO Stephan Herrmann leads it with fellow founders Felix Fischer, Jeremias Weinrich, Maximilian Hauck and Luis Poblotzki. Their immediate challenge is moving a complex electrochemical system from field deployments into repeatable industrial production.

That transition matters now. Reverion reports seven customer plants operating in the field, a $2 billion pipeline revenue opportunity and more than 200 employees. A new $175 million Series B is intended primarily to fund a German production site with 250 megawatts of annual capacity. Those are company-reported signals, not audited demand or contracted backlog. They still show a company approaching the point where manufacturing discipline matters as much as invention.

A Power Plant That Reverses

Reverion's system is based on solid oxide fuel cells. In power-generation mode, it converts a gaseous fuel into electricity and heat. In reverse, the stack operates as a high-temperature electrolyzer, using electricity to produce hydrogen or renewable methane that can be stored in existing gas infrastructure.

The architecture is especially relevant to biogas operators. Conventional combined heat and power units commonly burn biogas to produce electricity, but their electrical efficiency is limited. Reverion says its current 500-kilowatt units have demonstrated 74.2% electrical efficiency in the field. The German Future Prize describes that result as a world record for decentralized power generation.

Efficiency changes the economics because more of the energy in each unit of gas becomes electricity. Reversibility changes the operating model because the asset can respond when the grid has too much power as well as too little. The plant can generate during shortages and absorb surplus renewable electricity during periods of oversupply.

Reverion also integrates carbon capture. When the fuel is biogas, the carbon in the process is biogenic rather than fossil. If the separated CO2 is permanently stored, the overall pathway can be carbon-negative. That claim depends on the fuel source and on durable storage. Running on natural gas does not automatically produce the same climate outcome.

From Research System to Containerized Product

The founders began developing the underlying technology in 2015 at the Technical University of Munich. Their work focused on making solid oxide cells operate reversibly while controlling the thermal and chemical stresses that can shorten equipment life.

Packaging the system inside a standard container is an important product decision. A containerized plant can be manufactured centrally, transported to a site and installed beside existing gas, electrical and heat infrastructure. That does not make deployment simple. Each project still requires permitting, grid connection, gas handling, heat integration and reliable maintenance. It does make the product more repeatable than a power plant engineered from scratch for every location.

Reverion's current machines are rated at 500 kilowatts. The company says the Series B will support a megawatt-class product and a new production site in Germany. Planned annual capacity of 250 megawatts would represent roughly a tenfold expansion and could support up to 800 jobs, according to the company.

The factory is the strategic hinge. Laboratory performance can prove that the cycle works. Seven field units can reveal how it behaves with real operators, fuels and grids. A production line has to reproduce that performance across hundreds of systems while controlling component quality, delivery schedules and service costs.

The Grid Value Is Flexibility

Wind and solar generation do not arrive on command. As their share of electricity grows, grids need resources that can absorb excess power, store energy across longer periods and generate when weather-driven supply falls.

Batteries are effective for many short-duration balancing tasks. Gas infrastructure offers a different kind of storage: molecules can be held for longer periods and moved through networks already built at scale. Reverion's proposition is to connect those systems without dedicating separate assets to power generation and electrolysis.

That two-way capability creates several possible revenue streams. A plant may sell electricity when prices are attractive, consume power when prices are low or negative, provide grid-balancing services, produce renewable gas and separate biogenic CO2. The exact mix depends on local rules, fuel supply, storage access and energy prices. Reverion has not publicly disclosed customer-level economics, utilization or profitability, so the commercial case should be evaluated project by project.

Partners are helping test how the system travels. Doosan Fuel Cell agreed to work with Reverion on production and commercialization, including Asian markets. Frontier selected Reverion for a carbon-removal offtake tied to capturing and storing biogenic CO2. These relationships support manufacturing reach and an early route to carbon-removal revenue, but neither substitutes for scaled operating evidence.

A Five-Founder Operating Team

Herrmann serves as chief executive. Fischer leads operations, Weinrich product, Hauck technology and Poblotzki digital systems. Andreas Aepli joined as chief financial officer in 2026. The division of roles fits the problem in front of the company: industrialize the hardware, improve the core stack, turn site data into better performance and finance a capital-intensive ramp.

Reverion's live careers board listed 24 entries during this review, including an open application. Most roles were concentrated in engineering, production, testing, controls and technical operations. A job board is a point-in-time signal rather than proof of growth, but this mix is consistent with a company moving from demonstration units toward factory output.

The company describes its mission as making renewable energy available around the clock. The practical version is less poetic and more useful: build machines that can earn their keep when electricity moves in either direction, then make enough of them without losing the performance that made the first units interesting.

What Reverion Has to Prove

Reverion has already cleared several difficult gates. It has moved reversible solid oxide technology out of the university, packaged it as a transportable product, deployed customer units and measured strong field efficiency. The next gates are about repetition.

The company must show that megawatt-class systems can be manufactured on schedule, commissioned consistently and maintained over long operating lives. It must also show that the two-way economics remain attractive across different electricity markets and biogas sites. Durability, uptime, service requirements and customer payback will matter more than a peak efficiency number once the fleet grows.

The opportunity is substantial because the grid increasingly needs flexible resources that connect electricity, renewable molecules and long-duration storage. Reverion's advantage is that it has combined those functions in one container. Its real test is whether a remarkable machine can become ordinary infrastructure.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Reverion do?

Reverion builds containerized, reversible power plants that can convert gas into electricity and run in reverse to use electricity for producing hydrogen or renewable methane.

Who founded Reverion?

Reverion was founded by Stephan Herrmann, Felix Fischer, Jeremias Weinrich, Maximilian Hauck and Luis Poblotzki after research that began at the Technical University of Munich.

How efficient is Reverion's power plant?

Reverion reports 74.2% electrical efficiency measured in field operation for its current 500-kilowatt units. The German Future Prize describes this as a world record for decentralized power generation.

How can Reverion's system be carbon-negative?

When the system runs on biogas, separates the resulting biogenic carbon dioxide and sends that CO2 to permanent storage, the pathway can remove more atmospheric carbon than it emits. The outcome depends on fuel source and durable storage.

How many Reverion plants are operating?

Reverion reported seven customer plants operating in the field as of September 2026. This is a company-reported deployment figure.

Is Reverion hiring?

Yes. During this October 2026 review, Reverion's careers board listed 24 entries, including an open application, with most roles in engineering, production, testing, controls and technical operations.
