Kairos Power Turns Advanced Nuclear Into a Learning System

Kairos Power Turns Advanced Nuclear Into a Learning System

Kairos Power is a vertically integrated nuclear technology, engineering, and manufacturing company developing the Kairos Power Fluoride Salt-Cooled High-Temperature Reactor, or KP-FHR. Founded in 2016 and headquartered in Alameda, California, the company is led by CEO and co-founder Mike Laufer and CTO and co-founder Edward Blandford.

The KP-FHR combines TRISO fuel in pebble form with a low-pressure fluoride salt coolant known as Flibe. The company is targeting a market that needs dependable, carbon-free power, including utilities and data-center operators whose electricity demand is moving faster than the grid's patience.

What makes Kairos Power worth studying is not a claim that advanced nuclear has suddenly become easy. It has not. The signal is the operating model: build hardware, test it, collect data, manufacture more of the critical system in-house, and make the next version less theoretical than the last.

About Kairos Power

Kairos Power grew from research conducted across U.S. universities and national laboratories. The company was founded in 2016 and now operates across three main locations. Alameda anchors engineering, rapid prototyping, and corporate operations. Albuquerque houses manufacturing, modular systems, salt production, and fuel-development work. Oak Ridge, Tennessee, is home to the Hermes reactor program.

The leadership bench reflects the transition from research project to industrial company. Mike Laufer remains CEO and co-founder. Edward Blandford remains CTO and co-founder. Ignacio Redondo joined as CFO in September 2026, bringing finance experience relevant to a company moving deeper into capital-intensive construction and deployment.

That distinction matters. A reactor developer can have elegant physics and still lose the plot in procurement, fabrication, quality assurance, licensing, construction sequencing, or financing. Kairos Power is assembling the organization around the whole delivery chain.

How the KP-FHR Works

The KP-FHR design uses TRISO fuel particles embedded in pebble fuel and cooled by Flibe, a mixture of lithium fluoride and beryllium fluoride salts. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission describes Hermes, the company's first nuclear demonstration, as a 35 MWth low-power test reactor. Hermes will not generate electricity. Its purpose is to produce operating data and demonstrate key elements of the technology.

Kairos Power's technical case rests on combining robust coated-particle fuel with a coolant that can operate at high temperature and low pressure. The commercial case is harder. The company still has to prove that the system can be licensed, built, operated, repeated, and priced competitively. Physics gets the first vote. Project delivery gets every vote after that.

This is why Kairos Power's iterative development model matters. The company uses successive non-nuclear and nuclear design-build-test cycles to validate equipment, manufacturing methods, operating procedures, and analytical models before asking a commercial plant to carry all of that uncertainty at once.

From Hardware Demonstrations to the Grid

The Engineering Test Unit series gives Kairos Power a place to learn without nuclear fuel. The company reported in June 2026 that it had produced more than 60,000 surrogate fuel pebbles for testing, including work supporting ETU 2 in Albuquerque. Those pebbles are not commercial fuel. They are process evidence: repetition, automation, tolerances, inspection, and the ability to make the next unit more consistently than the last.

Hermes 1 is the first nuclear step. The NRC issued its construction permit in December 2023, the first U.S. construction permit for a non-light-water reactor in more than 50 years. The U.S. Department of Energy has committed up to $303M to support design, construction, and commissioning through the Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program.

Hermes 2 is the bridge toward power production. The planned 50 MWe plant in Oak Ridge is expected to deliver electricity to the Tennessee Valley Authority grid under a binding power purchase agreement. Google will receive clean-energy attributes for data centers in Tennessee and Alabama. Hermes 2 is also the first planned deployment under a multi-plant agreement with Google covering up to 500 MW by 2035. The current target for Hermes 2 operation is 2030.

Targets are not operating plants. The value of the sequence is that each project creates an evidence trail for the next one.

Manufacturing Is Part of the Product

Kairos Power is not treating manufacturing as a procurement problem to solve after the reactor design is finished. At its Albuquerque Manufacturing Development Campus, the company is developing reactor components, modular equipment skids, pressure vessels, fuel-production processes, and reactor-grade salt capabilities.

Kairos Power reports more than $125M invested and more than 140 jobs created at the Albuquerque site. The campus includes a 30,000-square-foot Modular Systems Facility, a pressure-vessel shop, fuel-development laboratories, and a salt-production facility under construction. The company also reports more than 500 team members nationwide.

Vertical integration raises costs and management complexity. It can also expose design mistakes earlier, preserve learning inside the company, and reduce dependence on a supply chain that was not built for repeat orders of fluoride-salt reactor components. For Kairos Power, the factory is not backstage. It is one of the main experiments.

Why the Market Is Paying Attention

The commercial context has shifted. Utilities need firm generation. Data-center demand is accelerating. Large electricity buyers want carbon-free supply that can complement wind and solar. At the same time, the nuclear industry still carries a history of projects that arrived late, cost more than planned, or never left the slide deck.

Kairos Power is trying to answer that credibility problem with staged commitments. Google provides a long-term demand signal. TVA provides a utility pathway and grid connection. The NRC process creates regulatory accountability. Partners such as Samsung C&T bring construction and project-delivery capabilities. None of those relationships proves final economics, but together they move the company from laboratory ambition toward an executable delivery system.

The company's name comes from the Greek word for the right or opportune moment. The timing is certainly loud. The harder question is whether the organization can turn urgency into repeatable plants.

Leadership, Culture, and the Hiring Signal

Kairos Power's careers page shows hiring across engineering, manufacturing, operations, and business functions. The company describes its culture as mission-driven, responsible, people-centered, pioneering, collaborative, action-oriented, and direct and honest. Those are company-stated values, not an independent workplace audit.

The more useful signal is the work itself. A team building reactors needs nuclear engineers, but it also needs machinists, welders, technicians, materials specialists, quality professionals, construction operators, licensing experts, and finance leaders. Kairos Power's footprint shows a company hiring around physical execution, not just design.

That makes the company relevant to a broader class of builders. Advanced nuclear will not scale through physics alone. It will scale if the people who design, manufacture, inspect, license, finance, construct, and operate the system can make one learning loop hold.

What Kairos Power Has to Prove Next

Kairos Power has passed meaningful gates: a construction permit, active reactor construction, substantial manufacturing infrastructure, a utility PPA, a large customer development agreement, and more than 500 people working across a national footprint. It has not yet proved commercial operation or fleet economics.

The next evidence will come from commissioning ETU systems, completing Hermes construction, producing qualified fuel and salt, advancing operating licenses, delivering Hermes 2, and showing that learning from one unit materially improves the next. Cost and schedule discipline will matter as much as nuclear performance.

That is the real Company Spotlight. Kairos Power is building a reactor, but it is also building the institutional memory required to build the second reactor better. In advanced nuclear, the second machine may be the product that finally matters.
