Frontline Gig Company Spotlight: Work Before the Job

Frontline Gig is a Baltimore workforce-technology company that turns energy, infrastructure, and community-resilience projects into paid field experience. Founder and CEO Dr. Kala Fleming built the company around a stubborn gap in the labor market: training can teach a skill, and a job can reward it, but people still need a credible place to prove they can do the work.

The company serves workers entering the trades and green economy, along with contractors, public agencies, utilities, housing authorities, workforce programs, and community organizations trying to staff real projects. Its system connects opportunity discovery, project planning, crew coordination, participation records, learning, and follow-up.

That matters now because the energy transition has an execution problem hiding underneath its capital plans. The United States can fund a building retrofit, a tree-planting campaign, or a resilience program. The work still requires prepared people who can arrive, follow technical direction, contribute safely, and build enough experience to earn the next assignment.

What Frontline Gig Builds

The Frontline Talent Marketplace gives people one place to explore paid gigs, jobs, training, career support, and community projects. Frontline Academy adds self-paced preparation, while Frontline @Work records the people and projects behind the work. Responsive Cities connects project activity and field observations to a longer-lived community record.

CrewUp by Frontline is the operating layer for organizations. Project managers define the work, site requirements, roles, timing, and expected outputs. Crew leads coordinate people in the field. Workforce teams can see attendance, participation, results, and next steps without stitching together another heroic spreadsheet and a text-message archaeology project.

Frontline describes the workflow in 4 words: Project. Gig. Crew. Results. The plain language is useful because the product is not trying to become the technical authority on a jobsite. Current company materials say project owners remain responsible for standards, approvals, safety, and work quality. CrewUp does not produce an automated readiness score. People remain responsible for judgment.

The Gap Between Training and a Career

Many workforce systems are organized around a clean sequence: training, credential, job. Real life is messier. A person may finish a course but lack recent field experience. An employer may need proof of reliability before making a full-time commitment. A community project may have funding but not the coordination capacity to convert local interest into a prepared crew.

Frontline inserts a paid experience layer into that sequence. A short, appropriately scoped assignment can give a participant something more useful than another abstract promise. It can produce hours, responsibilities, field evidence, a reflection, and a next step. It can also give project leaders an observable record without pretending a single gig proves full occupational competence.

The market pressure is real. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 75,900 additional electrician jobs from 2025 to 2035. The U.S. Department of Energy's 2026 employment report documents persistent hiring difficulty tied to experience, training, technical skills, and qualifications. Those numbers do not prove Frontline's model, but they explain why another résumé database will not close the gap.

Pittsburgh Is the Working Test

Pittsburgh is Frontline's clearest implementation market. The company lists active local work there, while New Orleans is in launch planning and New York City is in market development. Those labels matter. They separate current execution from a map decorated with ambition.

In April 2025, Dream.Org described a partnership with Frontline, American Forests, and GitLab Foundation designed to connect 1,000 Pittsburgh residents with paid, flexible clean-energy experience over 2 years and move at least 100 people toward careers paying $50K or more. Those are program goals, not finished outcomes.

Frontline's community-project materials show what the operating model looks like on the ground. A tree campaign requires outreach, participant preparation, crew assignments, reminders, attendance, field coordination, photos, observations, and follow-up. The software supports that workflow. Trusted local leaders and technical partners still lead the people and the work.

A Founder Trained to Connect Systems

Dr. Kala Fleming brings an engineering and systems background to a problem usually discussed as recruiting. Halcyon's founder profile describes Fleming as an engineer with a PhD, more than a decade of experience including IBM, and 10 patents. Frontline's founding thesis reflects that history: labor supply, project delivery, data, mentorship, and community trust are connected parts of one system.

That perspective also keeps the technology in its lane. Frontline uses AI-supported guidance through Kai to help participants prepare, reflect, and identify next steps. The public evidence does not show an algorithm replacing qualified supervisors or deciding who is competent for technical work. In a market stuffed with software that promises to remove humans from human problems, restraint is a feature.

Frontline was founded in 2022 and remains a small private company. No current second executive was verified through official sources. That is worth stating because startup profiles often turn expired biographies into present-tense org charts. The verified leadership story is Fleming's.

Capital for the Last Mile

On September 24, 2026, Frontline announced a $250K pre-seed social-impact investment from the Richard King Mellon Foundation. The capital is intended to grow the Talent Marketplace, develop CrewUp, deepen Pittsburgh activity, and prepare work in New York City and New Orleans.

Frontline previously received a $25K investment and $5K in non-dilutive program capital through the 2023 Dream Climate Tech Launchpad. A separate Virginia record identifies a $75K award. Those are different forms of support, so combining them into one clean venture-funding number would create more certainty than the records allow.

The company reports more than 1,000 people engaged across its platform and estimated project cost savings of up to 37% when supervised trainees join appropriately scoped work. Both figures are company-reported and unaudited. The 1,000 figure is not a placement count, and the 37% estimate is not proof that every project or customer will see the same result.

What Frontline Gig Must Prove Next

Frontline's strategic idea is easy to understand: projects can create paid experience, and paid experience can become a more credible bridge into work. The hard part is operating that bridge repeatedly across different cities, partners, safety requirements, occupations, and funding structures.

The next meaningful evidence will be audited or consistently defined placement, retention, repeat-participation, customer, and project-performance data. Expansion into New Orleans and New York City will also test whether Frontline can preserve local trust while standardizing enough of the workflow to scale.

There is no verified corporate careers page or current company opening to promote. People looking for gigs, jobs, labs, or training can use the Frontline Talent Marketplace, while organizations can evaluate CrewUp for their own projects. That is a more honest call to action than pretending every promising startup is hiring simply because a template expects it.

Frontline Gig is building workforce infrastructure in the narrow space between money allocated and work completed. If it succeeds, the product will not be another place to describe potential. It will be a system that lets people demonstrate it, one paid project at a time.
