Authors First Puts Writers Back in the Director's Chair

Authors First is a New York book-to-screen studio and distribution platform built around an unusually direct proposition: the author keeps creative control. Founder and CEO Robert Hamwee launched the company publicly in October 2026 after founding it in 2025.

The company uses a human-led, AI-enabled production model to turn books into premium episodic series. Writers, artists, editors, and production specialists still do the creative work. Technology expands what that team can put on screen and lowers the economic barrier around worlds that traditional studios may judge too expensive.

Authors First matters because it is testing two assumptions at once. One is financial: production technology can make ambitious genre adaptations viable at smaller budgets. The other is institutional: an adaptation can preserve the author's authority instead of treating the original creator like a ceremonial guest after the rights are sold.

About Authors First

Robert Hamwee spent three decades in private equity and institutional finance, including 18 years at New Mountain Capital, before building Authors First. The company says the idea came from his lifelong habit of reading historical fiction, science fiction, and fantasy, then keeping a list of books he wished could reach the screen.

That origin explains the product. Authors First is not beginning with anonymous intellectual property and searching for a marketable treatment. It starts with a book, works directly with its author, and carries that relationship through character creation, scripting, storyboarding, virtual cinematography, and final approval.

The company gives authors full creative control, final-cut approval, and a share in the upside. For fans, the pitch is a "watch the book" experience. For authors, it is a different bargain from the traditional option-and-adaptation path, where the original creator can lose meaningful influence as more stakeholders enter the room.

How the Authors First Production Model Works

The Authors First production process moves through eight stages: book, characters, script, style, storyboard, framed shot, rough video, and final video. The sequence is deliberately book-first. The original text serves as the story bible, while the author helps approve character design, tone, performance, pacing, and the final piece.

The company is equally explicit that its process is not a matter of feeding a novel into a machine and waiting for a television series to fall out. Humans write the script. Artists draw the storyboards. Directors and editors make decisions about rhythm, framing, and performance. Generative AI and other tools sit inside that production system.

That distinction will matter. Entertainment labor, author rights, AI disclosure, and creative attribution have become inseparable from the economics of synthetic media. Authors First is trying to make author control and human creative work part of the product design, not an apology bolted onto the credits.

Genghis Is the First Test of the Model

The debut series, Genghis: Birth of an Empire, adapts Conn Iggulden's Conqueror novels. The production involved more than 30 artists, according to the company's launch announcement. Iggulden helped guide narrative arcs, dialogue, camera choices, score, and visual detail, and retained final-cut approval.

That is a serious test case. Historical epics are expensive because scale is not optional. Armies, landscapes, costumes, architecture, weather, and continuity all have to survive the camera. Authors First is betting that a hybrid digital workflow can carry that scale without turning the result into disposable visual noise.

The public slate extends beyond one author. Authors First names Peter F. Hamilton's Pandora's Star alongside work connected to David W. Ball and R.A. Salvatore. Those choices are strategically coherent. Science fiction, fantasy, and historical fiction often arrive with deep worlds, established readers, and production budgets large enough to keep adaptations trapped in development.

Leadership Connects Finance, Film, and Digital Production

Hamwee brings capital-markets experience to a business that has to finance expensive creative work before audience demand is proven. Chief Content Officer Garrett Weaver adds film acquisition, licensing, and distribution experience from eOne and Universal Pictures. Head of Creative and Showrunner Taran Chadha leads development and production of the studio's series.

Senior Producer Gina Bouchard manages artists, vendors, production pipelines, and schedules. Chief Experience Officer John S. Couch works across storytelling, design, and emerging technology. The broader official team includes marketing, art direction, editing, communications, finance, production, and intellectual-property advisers.

The team composition is more informative than a generic claim about culture. Authors First has assembled people who understand rights, production, distribution, product design, and operational finance. That mix matches the actual problem. Making one striking trailer is creative work. Building a repeatable studio and distribution platform is creative work plus a supply chain.

No official careers page or current public list of open roles was verified. The honest hiring signal is therefore the team already assembled, not an invitation to apply for jobs that may not exist.

More Than $10M Funds the Commercial Test

Authors First came out of stealth with more than $10M in Seed financing. Brand Foundry and Hamwee led the round. Bolt Ventures, the family office of David Blitzer, Andy Mills, Mike Duggal, and John Kline participated.

The funding gives Authors First room to move from a compelling production thesis to a slate and a distribution business. The company plans to release work through a coming Authors First app and distribute on other digital platforms through Filmhub. No app launch date, audience metrics, revenue, or title-level economics have been disclosed.

Those missing numbers are the next scoreboard. Authors First still has to prove that viewers will choose these adaptations, that quality can hold across multiple series, that author-intensive collaboration can scale, and that lower production costs can support durable economics instead of simply producing more content.

What Authors First Signals for Entertainment

The entertainment industry does not lack books. It lacks an affordable way to adapt many of them without sanding off the qualities that made readers care in the first place. Authors First is attacking both halves of that problem: production cost and creator authority.

If the model works, the company could widen the market for ambitious adaptations while giving authors a stronger role in how their worlds are translated. It could also create more work for writers, artists, editors, and production specialists by greenlighting projects that conventional cost structures leave untouched.

The risk is just as clear. AI-assisted video can reduce certain production constraints, but it cannot guarantee taste, continuity, emotional performance, or audience trust. The studio will be judged by the finished series, not the novelty of the pipeline.

Authors First has built a sharp opening position: respected genre authors, a cross-functional entertainment team, more than $10M in capital, and a governance model that puts the original creator in the room for every consequential decision. Now the company has to turn author control from a persuasive promise into something audiences can see on screen.
