Reverion Raises $175M to Scale Reversible Power Plants

Seven operating plants can establish that Reverion's reversible fuel-cell system works. A planned factory with 250 MW of annual capacity has to establish something harder: that the company can manufacture the same performance repeatedly, finance the ramp and find customers fast enough to absorb it.

Reverion has raised a $175M Series B led by Kembara to make that transition. Allianz, KfW Capital, Aurum Impact and Carbon Equity joined as new investors, while Extantia, Energy Impact Partners, UVC Partners, the European Innovation Council Fund, alfa8 and Possible Ventures returned. The Eresing, Germany company said most of the capital will support a new production site in Germany with 250 MW of annual manufacturing capacity and the potential for as many as 800 jobs. The round turns Reverion's story from a question about whether an unusual power plant can work into a question about whether industrial execution can keep pace with the demand the company says it sees.

What Reverion Announced

Reverion's funding announcement describes the financing as a $175M Series B and names Kembara as lead investor. The company intends to increase production tenfold, build the additional factory and move its product into the megawatt class.

Reverion reports a commercial project pipeline exceeding $2B in revenue potential. It also says seven plants are operating at customer sites, its current unit output has reached 500 kW and its Eresing workforce has grown from about 100 to more than 200 employees. Those figures describe company-reported demand and deployment, not booked revenue, audited results or guaranteed orders.

The announcement carries a date wrinkle worth preserving. Reverion's page is labeled September 28, 2026, while the release itself is datelined September 29 in Eresing. The company did not disclose its valuation, round terms, investor allocations, revenue, profitability or customer names.

One Plant, Two Directions

Reverion grew out of research at the Technical University of Munich. The technical idea dates to 2015, while the company was incorporated in 2022. Its current founding team is Stephan Herrmann, CEO; Felix Fischer, COO; Jeremias Weinrich, CPO; Maximilian Hauck, CTO; and Luis Poblotzki, CDO. Andreas Aepli joined as the company's first CFO in March 2026.

The company's containerized systems use solid oxide fuel cells to convert biogas, natural gas or hydrogen into electricity. When renewable electricity is abundant, the same system can reverse into electrolysis mode and produce hydrogen or synthetic methane for storage. That two-way design matters because the commercial job is not only to generate power efficiently. It is to connect stored gas with the hours when the grid needs firm electricity.

Reverion says a pre-series plant reached 74.2% electrical efficiency in live customer operation. The German Future Prize's official 2026 profile describes the result as a world record for thermal power plants and says the system is already operating in the field across 100 kW and 500 kW configurations.

The carbon claim needs the same precision as the efficiency claim. The equipment can capture high-purity biogenic CO2 when running on biogas. Operation becomes carbon-negative when that biogenic carbon is captured and permanently stored. A plant running on natural gas for on-site data-center power is not automatically carbon-negative merely because the hardware can perform that pathway with a different fuel and carbon disposition.

Why Industrialization Is the Real Series B Story

Reverion's previous financing supported the step into serial production. In 2024, the company announced a $62M Series A that included non-dilutive funding, led by Energy Impact Partners with Honda and the EIC Fund participating. In 2025, it received a separate €19.5M award from the European Union Innovation Fund. Earlier official announcements disclosed more than €7M of seed financing in 2022 and €8.5M in 2023.

Those amounts should not be collapsed into one clean cumulative-funding figure. They mix currencies, equity and non-dilutive support. The Series B is the clearest current measure of private growth capital, while the grants show how much public funding has also helped move a hardware company through research, demonstration and manufacturing preparation.

Supply-chain work is already visible. In August 2026, Reverion expanded its partnership with Doosan Fuel Cell for large-volume SOFC stack supply, describing it as Doosan's largest international order to date. The company's current Personio board listed 24 entries during this run, including an open application, with engineering and production roles making up most of the named positions.

What the $175M Has to Prove

Moving from seven field units to a 250 MW annual factory introduces a new class of risk. Repeatable quality, supplier capacity, field service, working capital and commissioning speed can become more important than another efficiency milestone. A megafactory only creates leverage when output leaves the line, performs at customer sites and converts a pipeline into paid deployments.

Data centers are one part of Reverion's expansion thesis because operators face long grid-connection waits and require firm power. Biogas operators remain important because higher electrical efficiency can produce more power from the same fuel while separating biogenic CO2. Industrial sites and utilities add other demand profiles, each with different fuel economics, carbon accounting and uptime requirements.

The $175M gives Reverion the capital to build the manufacturing bridge between those markets and its field evidence. The next proof point is no longer a single plant setting a record. It is whether a much larger production system can deliver that result often enough for customers, suppliers and investors to treat it as ordinary infrastructure.

Frequently Asked Questions

What will Reverion use the $175M Series B for?

Reverion said the financing will mainly support a new production site in Germany, increase manufacturing capacity tenfold to 250 MW annually, move its product into the megawatt class and support as many as 800 jobs.

Who led Reverion's Series B?

Kembara led the $175M round. New investors Allianz, KfW Capital, Aurum Impact and Carbon Equity joined alongside returning backers Extantia, Energy Impact Partners, UVC Partners, the EIC Fund, alfa8 and Possible Ventures.

What does Reverion's power plant do?

Reverion's solid oxide fuel-cell system converts biogas, natural gas or hydrogen into electricity. It can also reverse into electrolysis mode and use surplus electricity to produce hydrogen or synthetic methane for storage.

Why does Reverion describe its technology as carbon-negative?

When the system runs on biogas, it can separate biogenic CO2 rather than releasing it. Carbon-negative operation depends on capturing and permanently storing that biogenic carbon; the claim does not automatically apply to every fuel or deployment.

How far has Reverion progressed commercially?

Reverion reports seven plants operating at customer sites, current unit output of 500 kW and a commercial project pipeline exceeding $2B in revenue potential. The pipeline and related metrics are company-reported and are not disclosed as audited revenue or booked backlog.
