Reliable Robotics Raises $160M to Scale Autonomous Aircraft Systems and FAA-Certified Cargo Aviation

Ambition like this doesn’t introduce itself politely. It shows up with clearance requests, regulatory filings, and a quiet confidence that the sky is about to get a software update. Reliable Robotics just locked in $160M, and now autonomy in aviation feels less like a panel discussion and more like a boarding call.

Respect where it’s due. Robert Rose (CEO) and Juerg Frefel (CTO) did not come to play startup dress up. They came out of SpaceX with a working understanding of what happens when software meets consequence. Now they are building Reliable Robotics in Mountain View, turning that same safety critical mindset toward the sky we all share. Not drones in a sandbox. Real aircraft, real airspace, real rules.

Nimble Partners led the round, with Eclipse, Lightspeed Venture Partners, Coatue Management, and Pathbreaker Ventures running it back. Then you’ve got Island Green Capital, Socium Ventures from Cox Enterprises, AE Ventures tied to Boeing, RTX Ventures, Presidio Ventures out of Sumitomo Corporation, UP.Partners, KAS Venture Partners, What If Ventures, Calm Ventures, Gaingels, and Mana Ventures stepping in. That is not a cap table. That is a coalition betting that autonomy earns its wings through discipline, not demos.

The product is where the story tightens. Reliable Autonomy System is built to retrofit existing aircraft like the Cessna 208 Caravan, layering in automation and remote operation designed for FAA certification. Translation for the non-aviation crowd. They are not waiting for a new plane. They are upgrading the ones already in rotation. Less sci fi, more supply chain.

And then there is the radar. Detect and avoid is not a nice to have when you are sharing airspace with everything from cargo haulers to weekend pilots. Reliable Robotics is developing its own system to make that coexistence real, not theoretical. NASA and the Department of Defense are already in the mix, which tells you this is not a side quest.

The business takeaway sits right in front of you if you are paying attention. They chose the hard path. Certification over hype. Integration over reinvention. Partnerships with regulators instead of press releases about disruption. It takes longer. It also builds something that can actually scale.
