Petra Labs Raises $5.2M Seed for Enterprise AI Attribution

Petra Labs announced a $5.2M Seed round led by Work-Bench, with participation from Afore, Pathlight, and strategic angels. The New York startup is building an answer engine optimization (AEO) business around a problem enterprise marketers know well: a visibility score can look impressive while saying very little about revenue.

The round, announced on July 22, 2026, backs a software-plus-service model that tracks how brands appear in AI systems, executes against those findings, and builds custom attribution models. The broader bet is that AI search will not become a durable marketing channel until it can survive the same budget scrutiny as paid search, email, and every other line item watched by a finance team.

What Petra Labs Announced

Petra Labs was founded in 2025 by Sami Akkawi, CEO; Rishi Penmetcha, CTO; and Ramie Khoury, COO. Together, they bring experience spanning private equity advisory, large-scale data systems, AI agents, enterprise sales, and growth operations.

The company positions itself as an end-to-end AEO partner for enterprise brands. Its platform surfaces the questions buyers ask AI assistants, measures brand presence and sentiment across models, identifies competitive threats, and connects those insights to an embedded team responsible for strategy and execution.

The Seed announcement does not disclose a valuation, previous funding, the identities of the strategic angels, or a detailed use-of-funds plan. It also names Pathlight without enough information to identify the specific investment entity. The source-supported version of the transaction is straightforward: Work-Bench led the $5.2M round, Afore and Pathlight participated, and the remaining angels were not identified.

Why AI Search Attribution Matters

McKinsey reported in 2025 that half of surveyed consumers intentionally used AI-powered search, while 44% identified it as their primary and preferred source of insight. That shift moves product research and brand evaluation into systems where buyers may never click a traditional search result.

The measurement problem becomes more complicated from there. Similarweb's 2026 analysis estimated that visits to AI platforms continued rising while outbound referrals flattened. AI influence can expand without creating an equally clean trail of referral traffic. A buyer may ask an assistant for guidance, absorb the recommendation, return through another channel, and leave last-click attribution giving credit to the wrong source.

Petra Labs is targeting that blind spot rather than treating visibility as the finish line. Its stated goal is to connect AI-search activity to traffic, pipeline, and closed revenue through custom last-mile attribution, including multi-touch attribution and marketing mix modeling.

The Software-Plus-Service Bet

Most marketing platforms deliver a dashboard and consider the job complete. Petra Labs pairs its measurement platform with an embedded AEO team that executes on the findings, creating a model that looks more like services enabled by software than traditional self-service SaaS.

That approach creates an operational advantage. The team building the measurement layer also has to rely on it during customer engagements. Weak signals, noisy prompts, ineffective recommendations, and attribution gaps cannot hide behind a polished interface when the vendor is also responsible for execution.

Petra Labs organizes the workflow into four connected functions. It researches buyer queries using proprietary panel data and customer integrations, measures brand visibility and sentiment across AI platforms, executes recommendations through its AEO team, and then evaluates how those interventions affect commercial outcomes.

The company's customer stories include an end-to-end engagement with Zapier. Petra Labs also publishes case studies reporting 27x growth in AI-referred traffic over six months and 65% of Fractional Jobs' inbound leads originating from AI search. Those are company-reported results rather than independently verified outcomes, but they illustrate the type of commercial evidence the company is trying to make routine.

Why Work-Bench Led the Round

Work-Bench focuses on Seed-stage enterprise software and treats go-to-market as a core part of company building rather than something founders add later. Its official team page lists Petra Labs among Co-Founder and General Partner Jessica Lin's active portfolio companies, reinforcing the relationship behind the investment.

That alignment matters because Petra Labs is selling into enterprise marketing organizations that already have analytics platforms, agencies, content operations, and competing budget priorities. Another dashboard has to fight for attention. A partner that can identify an opportunity, execute the work, and connect the outcome directly to revenue presents a stronger case.

Petra Labs says Sami Akkawi spent five years at Strategy&, advising private equity firms across more than 50 acquisitions involving marketing data, technology, and services. Rishi Penmetcha previously built large-scale data systems and AI agents at Traba, while Ramie Khoury led Traba's growth organization across enterprise sales and operations.

What the Funding Signals

The AI-search market is moving from novelty toward accountability. Early platforms focused on showing whether brands appeared in AI-generated answers. Enterprise adoption introduces a more demanding standard: organizations need to know which prompts matter, which interventions changed the outcome, and whether those changes produced measurable business value.

Petra Labs is betting that attribution and execution will become the scarce capabilities as visibility monitoring becomes increasingly commoditized. The company is not alone in pursuing that opportunity, but its combination of custom measurement and hands-on execution is a distinct response to the limits of one-size-fits-all software.

The risk is equally clear. A services-heavy model can create stronger customer relationships while making scale, consistency, and margins more difficult. Custom attribution is only valuable when the underlying data is reliable. Petra Labs will have to demonstrate that it can transform bespoke customer work into repeatable infrastructure without losing the context that makes its recommendations valuable.

What to Watch Next

Petra Labs has an active careers page, and company posts describe hiring across engineering, growth, and strategy and operations. The funding announcement does not specify how the proceeds will be allocated, but hiring, product expansion, and customer-delivery capacity will be useful indicators of how the company is investing the new capital.

The more important test will be evidence. Watch for independently verifiable customer outcomes, greater transparency around attribution methodology, repeatable deployment patterns, and proof that the embedded-team model can scale without turning every new customer engagement into a bespoke consulting project.

AI search already influences how buyers discover products and companies. The unsettled question is who captures the value created by that influence and who can prove it. Petra Labs now has $5.2M in new funding to argue that the winning platform will not stop at showing where a brand appears, but will connect the answer to the decision and the decision to revenue.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Petra Labs do?

Petra Labs combines AI-search measurement software with an embedded AEO team. It researches buyer queries, tracks brand visibility and sentiment, executes recommendations, and builds attribution models intended to connect AI-search activity to pipeline and revenue.

Why does AI-search attribution matter for enterprise brands?

AI assistants can influence a buyer before that buyer clicks or returns through another channel. Attribution helps marketing teams determine whether visibility in AI answers contributed to traffic, pipeline, or revenue instead of relying on visibility scores alone.

Who invested in Petra Labs' $5.2M Seed round?

Work-Bench led the round, with participation from Afore, Pathlight, and undisclosed strategic angels. Petra Labs announced the financing on July 22, 2026.

Who founded Petra Labs?
