Molten Salt Solutions Raises $7M for Lithium Isotopes

Advanced nuclear projects are beginning to reserve materials before their supply chains exist at commercial scale. Molten Salt Solutions has closed an oversubscribed $7M Seed round to move lithium-isotope enrichment from laboratory validation toward pilot production, giving fusion and advanced-fission developers a potential domestic source for two materials their reactor plans may eventually require in volume.

Dolby Family Ventures led the round. Vanedge Capital Partners, Alumni Ventures, Gaingels, True Ventures, and Future Ventures participated. The financing was announced on August 31, 2026.

The Santa Fe company says the capital will support pilot-scale production, expand its technical and operations teams, fulfill customer agreements, and deepen relationships across the fusion and advanced-nuclear supply chain. The round follows a $3M pre-seed and more than $5M in grant funding, which puts disclosed equity at $10M while keeping non-dilutive support separate.

What Molten Salt Solutions Is Building

Molten Salt Solutions is developing enriched lithium-6 and lithium-7 through proprietary chromatography and solvent-exchange methods. Its high-speed counter-current chromatography approach repeatedly separates lithium ions between liquid phases inside an integrated system, concentrating the isotopes without relying on the sprawling sequence of discrete stages associated with older enrichment methods.

The isotope distinction matters. Lithium-6 is used to breed tritium in deuterium-tritium fusion fuel cycles, while lithium-7 is valuable in certain advanced fission molten-salt reactor designs because it absorbs fewer neutrons and helps limit unwanted tritium formation. The U.S. Department of Energy’s fusion strategy identifies lithium-6 and resilient domestic fuel-isotope supply as commercialization needs for potential fusion deployment.

Molten Salt Solutions says its platform is 100X more efficient than legacy enrichment approaches. That figure is company-reported, not an independently audited production result. A 2024 New Mexico technology-readiness report provides a narrower institutional proof point: work with Los Alamos National Laboratory advanced the relevant method to technology readiness level 4 and documented laboratory validation. TRL 4 shows that the chemistry worked in a controlled environment; it does not establish commercial throughput.

Why the $7M Seed Round Matters

Deep-tech companies are often discussed as invention stories, but the expensive handoff begins after the experiment works. Customers need material with repeatable purity, predictable throughput, documented handling, and delivery windows that can survive changes to a reactor program. Pilot production is where a scientific method starts accumulating that operating evidence.

Molten Salt Solutions already has early commercial signals. Heatmap reported that Type One Energy and Gauss Fusion signed nonbinding strategic sales agreements for enriched lithium, with initial kilogram-scale deliveries contemplated for 2027. In June, Molten Salt Solutions announced a separate commercial agreement with Fissionaire for lithium-7, with possible test-scale deliveries beginning in 2028 and later volumes tied to the reactor developer’s progress.

Those agreements should be read as qualified demand evidence. Type One and Gauss have not placed binding commercial-volume orders, and future delivery plans depend on Molten Salt Solutions building and qualifying the production capability. Fissionaire’s agreement adds a fission customer to the company’s fusion relationships, but its delivery schedule is also forward-looking.

The Capital and Supply-Chain Logic

Founder and CEO Dr. John Elling has spent years moving laboratory-rooted technologies toward commercial use. Molten Salt Solutions was founded in 2018 and has assembled a Santa Fe technical team with experience in isotope chemistry, chemical engineering, analytical chemistry, and materials science. The company’s current public team page does not list a CTO, so the verified leadership record centers on Elling.

The investor syndicate brings both new and returning capital. Dolby Family Ventures is the new lead, while True Ventures and Future Ventures also backed the company’s earlier financing. The round gives Molten Salt Solutions more room to build the process, hire the operators who must run it, and produce the samples customers will use to decide whether the material belongs inside future systems.

That investment logic reaches beyond one company. Fusion and advanced fission have attracted large pools of capital for plasma systems, magnets, reactor architecture, fuel cycles, and deployment programs. Each program eventually depends on specialized inputs that are less visible than the reactor but just as capable of delaying it. Enriched lithium sits inside that upstream category.

What the Market Should Watch

The next evidence will be operational. Molten Salt Solutions must show that its method can move from TRL 4 into a pilot environment, maintain isotope purity across repeated runs, increase throughput, and deliver samples that customers can qualify. Hiring and facility expansion matter only to the extent that they produce that record.

Customer progress matters too. The nonbinding agreements with Type One Energy and Gauss Fusion create a path for technical feedback, while Fissionaire adds a different isotope requirement and reactor use case. If those relationships convert into qualified deliveries, Molten Salt Solutions will have evidence across both sides of its lithium thesis: lithium-6 for fusion and lithium-7 for advanced fission.

The broader market signal is not that enriched-lithium supply is solved. It is that reactor developers and investors are beginning to finance the physical inputs before commercial deployment forces the issue. Molten Salt Solutions now has $7M to turn that anticipation into a pilot operation, with reactor schedules waiting further down the same supply chain.

Frequently Asked Questions

What funding did Molten Salt Solutions raise?

Molten Salt Solutions closed an oversubscribed $7M Seed round led by Dolby Family Ventures, with participation from Vanedge Capital Partners, Alumni Ventures, Gaingels, True Ventures, and Future Ventures.

What will Molten Salt Solutions use the Seed funding for?

The company says the capital will support pilot-scale production, technical and operations hiring, customer-agreement fulfillment, and deeper fusion and advanced-nuclear supply-chain partnerships.

Why are lithium-6 and lithium-7 important to nuclear energy?

Lithium-6 supports tritium breeding in deuterium-tritium fusion fuel cycles. Lithium-7 is used in certain advanced fission molten-salt reactor designs because of its neutron behavior and ability to reduce unwanted tritium formation.

Is Molten Salt Solutions already producing enriched lithium commercially?

The company is moving from laboratory validation toward pilot production. Its customer agreements and planned deliveries provide demand evidence, but commercial-scale output has not yet been established.
