Liquid Interactive Raises C$700K for Visual-First AI

Liquid Interactive publicly launched from stealth on July 28, 2026, with C$700K in pre-seed financing from AXL. The Toronto startup, led by co-founder and CEO Sasha Ivanov and co-founder and CTO Ben Pearman, is building visual-first generative AI interfaces that people can explore rather than simply read.

Its first product, Liquid Photos, transforms camera-roll images into interactive experiences. The company is starting with consumers, but the larger opportunity lies in creative software, product storytelling, and commerce, where static visual assets are everywhere and traditional 3D production remains expensive.

The round matters because Liquid Interactive is not trying to train another foundation model. It is betting that the next valuable layer in AI will be the interface, the place where increasingly capable models become experiences that ordinary people and creative teams actually want to use.

What Happened

Liquid Interactive disclosed C$700K in pre-seed backing from AXL, the venture studio where the company was incubated before spinning out. BetaKit reported that the startup emerged from stealth alongside the launch of Liquid Photos, while the company's own announcement confirms the financing, pre-seed stage, AXL relationship, and founding team.

The company has one disclosed investor and no published valuation. No earlier financing has been identified, making C$700K the total publicly disclosed funding to date. The company has also not disclosed how the capital will be allocated across hiring, compute, product development, or go-to-market activities.

Liquid Interactive is based in Toronto and was built inside AXL's applied AI venture environment. That structure matters because AXL combines research, prototyping, and company creation, giving an early-stage team more than capital while maintaining the discipline of a relatively focused pre-seed round.

What Liquid Interactive Is Building

Liquid Photos uses generative AI to transform ordinary images into content users can navigate and manipulate. Published demonstrations include turning a sequence of hiking photos into an explorable journey, creating exploded views of objects, answering questions about items within a photo through visual explanations, and sharing the results through a browser link, iMessage, or video.

The application is currently in beta for iPhone and Android users ahead of planned App Store and Google Play releases. That distinction matters because the product is mature enough for real-world testing but still early enough that user counts, retention, sharing behavior, and paid conversion remain undisclosed.

The company says it has filed 11 provisional patent applications covering technologies such as image transitions and gesture-based controls. Those filings demonstrate technical direction, but provisional applications are not issued patents and should not be viewed as evidence of a durable intellectual property advantage until they mature and the product earns adoption.

Why the Interface Bet Matters

The first wave of generative AI normalized the chat interface because text was the fastest way to expose model capability. That approach remains effective for many tasks, but it also forces visual, spatial, and creative work through a conversational interface that was never designed for exploration.

Liquid Interactive is making a different product argument: generated content should sometimes behave like a place or an object rather than a response. That positions the company alongside a broader shift already emerging across AI, where startups are moving from chat toward action and designing interaction models around what software actually does instead of placing every capability behind a prompt box.

There is practical value in that distinction. A shopper exploring a product, a traveler revisiting a hiking trip, or a creative director reviewing campaign assets may gain more by moving through a visual experience than by reading another generated paragraph describing it.

From Consumer Photos to Creative Infrastructure

Liquid Photos provides an accessible starting point because camera rolls already contain familiar content and the results can be understood immediately. Consumer adoption also creates a rapid feedback loop around interaction design, sharing behavior, and which generated experiences remain useful after the initial novelty fades.

The broader commercial thesis centers on Liquid Studio, a planned product for brands, agencies, and creative teams. Liquid Studio is intended to transform product images and campaign assets into interactive experiences without requiring a custom 3D production pipeline for every page or project, potentially positioning Liquid Interactive within commerce and content production workflows.

That expansion remains a thesis rather than proven distribution. BetaKit reported that the team is demonstrating the platform with brands, but no customers, revenue, commercial contracts, or named deployments have been disclosed. The next meaningful proof point will be whether early interest develops into sustained commercial use.

The Founders and AXL Connection

Sasha Ivanov and Ben Pearman developed the first version of Liquid Interactive inside AXL before spinning the company out. The founders previously worked together on Maple Scan, a Canadian shopping application associated with more than 130,000 downloads, giving them experience building a consumer product as well as the less glamorous challenge of encouraging people to use it consistently.

Pearman's published background includes graduate study in computer science and human-computer interaction at the University of Calgary, along with Apple-platform development. Ivanov is also listed on AXL's official team page as Lead Prototyper, reinforcing a company thesis centered on transforming advanced AI capabilities into interfaces people can intuitively understand.

AXL's role is therefore both financial and operational. The venture studio helped incubate the product, while AXL CEO Daniel Wigdor has argued that the defining AI companies may be those that close the gap between model capability and the way people actually use it.

What This Funding Signals

C$700K is modest compared with the multibillion-dollar AI financings dominating headlines, but that is not necessarily a weakness at this stage. The more important question is whether the capital gives Liquid Interactive enough time to demonstrate that people return to interactive visual experiences, brands can deploy them without burdensome production workflows, and the underlying technology performs reliably across diverse inputs.

The market context is equally important because generative AI is already reshaping creative work. A March 2026 Future Skills Centre report identified both opportunities for AI-assisted creative work and risks for entry-level and freelance roles. That makes Liquid Interactive's emphasis on extending existing creative assets worth watching without assuming the product resolves those broader industry tensions.

For operators and investors, the next evidence should be tangible: beta engagement, repeat creation, sharing behavior, named brand pilots, conversion into Liquid Studio, and progress beyond provisional patent filings. If those indicators advance, Liquid Interactive could become part of a more visual interface layer for AI. If they do not, the company will still illustrate how quickly impressive model capability can outpace durable user behavior.
