Helogen Raises $7.1M for Orbital Biomanufacturing

Helogen has raised a reported $7.1M Seed round co-led by RRE Ventures and Oceans, with One Way Ventures and Blisce also participating. The financing gives the New York and Los Angeles company more room to turn microgravity from an unusual research environment into a repeatable manufacturing process for biomaterials used on Earth.

Helogen's own September 1 disclosure places its total funding at $7.9M and lists AUM, Aurelia Foundry, Mana VC, and angel investors among its broader investor base. The company is preparing two October 2026 missions, one for proprietary orthopedic biomaterials and another for LambdaVision's artificial-retina material, while beginning the quality and regulatory work required for products manufactured in orbit.

What Helogen Raised and Who Backed It

Current funding coverage describes the transaction as a $7.1M Seed round co-led by RRE Ventures and Oceans, with One Way Ventures and Blisce participating. Helogen's official mission and financing disclosure says the company has raised $7.9M in total from that group plus AUM, Aurelia Foundry, Mana VC, and other angel investors. The distinction matters: $7.1M is the reported Seed round, while $7.9M is cumulative funding disclosed by the company.

Founder and CEO Shishir Bankapur started the company in 2022 as Odyssey SpaceWorks before it adopted the Helogen name. The business operates a manufacturing and engineering center in Los Angeles and a life-sciences laboratory in New York. Helogen says earlier financing supported two previous missions, the design and launch of its first spacecraft, development of its HEL-IOS manufacturing system, and work recognized through NASA's 2025 TechLeap Prize.

The Factory Is More Than the Flight

Helogen's core product is HEL-IOS, a zero-crew autonomous manufacturing system designed to combine biological cultivation, media and fluid management, environmental control, processing, separation, harvest, and in-process analysis in orbit. Its CELS subsystem adds imaging, spectroscopy, and sequencing, while the broader platform incorporates HEL-ICS and bioreactors into a closed workflow that can be operated from the ground.

That integration is the commercial argument. A customer does not need a science project assembled from separate launch, laboratory, monitoring, and recovery vendors. A customer needs a manufacturing process that can explain what happened to the material at every stage. Helogen is trying to own enough of that chain to make an orbital run behave less like an experiment and more like an accountable production job.

October Will Test Two Business Models

The first October mission will produce Helogen's proprietary biopolymers for orthopedic applications, including scaffolding material intended for knee and shoulder repair. The second will manufacture protein material for LambdaVision's artificial retina, marking LambdaVision's first mission outside the International Space Station. Both missions are planned and neither establishes clinical performance or regulatory approval.

Payload reports that the missions also expose Helogen's two-part business model. External customers can use HEL-IOS for product research and manufacturing, while Helogen develops its own materials for future sale after return to Earth. Bankapur told Payload that both mission types are intended to generate revenue, with internal products carrying more upside if the company can manufacture and sell meaningful quantities.

Why Regulation Belongs Inside the Manufacturing Story

Microgravity can change how cells, proteins, and other biological structures organize, but an unusual structure is not yet a medical product. For an orthopedic scaffold or artificial-retina material, the manufacturing record has to survive questions about sterility, consistency, recovery, custody, testing, and repeatability before a regulator or customer can trust the output.

Helogen says the October missions will begin that evidence chain. The company plans to collect material and process data relevant to terrestrial good manufacturing practice, including bioburden control, documented quality systems, traceability, and material recovery. It is also beginning the work required for FDA oversight of its proprietary materials. That language describes a regulatory path, not FDA clearance or proof that commercial-scale orbital production already meets GMP requirements.

What the Seed Capital Has to Prove

Helogen plans eight missions over the year following the October flights. According to Payload, roughly three-quarters would focus on internal products and the remainder on customer-funded research and development. The company is also developing larger infrastructure, including its planned Keystar orbital base, while hiring across aerospace engineering and biological systems.

Flight cadence can shorten the learning loop, but the useful unit is not simply another launch. Each mission has to convert orbital access into repeatable process knowledge, returned material, customer evidence, and a cleaner regulatory record. RRE Ventures General Partner and COO Will Porteous framed the investment around Helogen's plan to scale biomanufacturing in space, while the company says it is already building toward a Series A.

The Seed round buys Helogen a set of very expensive repetitions. October begins with two factories in orbit; the company will be judged by whether the data, material, and chain of custody come home ready for the next customer, the next regulator, and the next flight.
