Carefull Adds Duke Neuroscientist to Advance GreyMatter

A strange transaction is easy to flag after it appears. The harder question is what changed in the person before the money moved.

Carefull is building around that earlier moment.

The New York financial-safety company has appointed Gregory Samanez-Larkin, Ph.D., as Research Fellow. The role places the Duke University professor alongside Carefull’s product, data science and engineering teams as they work to translate behavioral science, cognitive neuroscience and consumer-finance research into the company’s technology.

Carefull serves older adults, caregivers and the financial institutions supporting them. Its platform monitors accounts for scams, fraud, identity theft and everyday financial mistakes. The company describes GreyMatter, its financial-intelligence engine, as the system responsible for identifying patterns of behavioral and financial risk.

Samanez-Larkin’s assignment reaches deeper than transaction monitoring. Carefull wants to understand how changes in motivation, judgment, relationships and life circumstances may indicate vulnerability before a traditional fraud system recognizes a problem.

Bringing the Science of Aging Into Product Development

Samanez-Larkin is a Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience at Duke University and a Professor of Business Administration at Duke’s Fuqua School of Business. He is also affiliated with the Duke Center for Cognitive Neuroscience and Duke Institute for Brain Sciences.

His research examines how motivation, emotion and cognition shape decision-making across a person’s life. That work has included questions involving financial risk, investment fraud, aging and the conditions that may make someone more vulnerable to financial exploitation.

Carefull says Samanez-Larkin will work directly with its teams rather than operate as a distant academic adviser. His role is intended to help the company evaluate existing research, identify findings that can be translated into products and test whether those applications behave as intended.

“My role is essentially to serve as a periscope into the scientific world,” Samanez-Larkin said in the announcement.

That description matters. Financial institutions already possess transaction histories, fraud rules and risk models. The scientific contribution Carefull is pursuing concerns the human context surrounding the data.

A change in spending may occur alongside retirement, relocation, the death of a spouse or a change in cognitive health. A transaction can look unusual without being harmful. Another can appear ordinary while sitting inside a much larger change in behavior, judgment or family dynamics.

Carefull’s challenge is turning that context into useful protection without treating every deviation as danger.

Moving Financial Protection Earlier

Carefull Co-Founder and Co-CEO Max Goldman argues that financial vulnerability rarely begins with one obvious transaction. According to Goldman, changes in behavior and relationships may develop before a conventional fraud system has enough information to react.

Samanez-Larkin’s work with Carefull is focused on finding signals within that earlier period.

“A tremendous amount of effort over the last 10 or 20 years has focused on catching a scam or fraud after it has happened,” he said. “But by then, there can already be enormous financial loss.”

Carefull says its objective is to identify meaningful changes before they develop into larger financial and social consequences. Samanez-Larkin also said the combination of scientific, data-science and engineering expertise is revealing patterns that would not emerge from reviewing transactions alone.

Those statements remain company claims. The eventual value of the work will depend on how reliably Carefull can distinguish genuine vulnerability from harmless changes in financial behavior, how institutions respond to those signals and whether families experience earlier protection without unnecessary alarm or intrusion.

The Psychology Behind Financial Independence

The product problem extends beyond fraud detection.

Money is connected to independence, identity, family responsibility and a person’s ability to make decisions without losing control of their life. Families trying to protect an older adult can easily create fear or resistance if concern is communicated poorly or intervention arrives without context.

Carefull is attempting to build technology that recognizes those human pressures.

Samanez-Larkin said financial decisions often touch a person’s sense of purpose and meaning. His work will examine how Carefull can provide useful support without damaging trust between older adults, caregivers and the institutions serving them.

That creates a difficult product standard. The system has to recognize risk early enough to matter while remaining careful about what the data can actually establish. Behavioral change may be meaningful, but meaning depends on context, relationships and the person living through it.

Carefull’s combination of account oversight, scam detection, identity and credit protection, trusted-contact coordination and human support gives the company several possible intervention points. GreyMatter is intended to help determine when those tools may be needed.

What Carefull Must Prove

Carefull says Samanez-Larkin’s research is already contributing to new areas of signal discovery within GreyMatter. The company also says the work can help it catch scams earlier, protect more families and intervene before warning signs produce significant harm.

Those are consequential claims in a market where a false signal can disrupt a family and a missed signal can leave someone exposed.

The opportunity is substantial. Financial institutions and wealth firms are looking for better ways to serve aging clients, support caregivers and maintain relationships as financial responsibility moves between generations. An effective early-awareness system could give those institutions a more useful role before a customer’s problem becomes a fraud investigation or family crisis.

The responsibility grows alongside that opportunity. Carefull will need to demonstrate how its models are evaluated, how interventions are designed and how scientific findings survive the transition from research literature into decisions affecting real people.

Samanez-Larkin now sits inside that transition.

His role is to help Carefull determine which signals deserve to become product behavior, which require more evidence and whether the resulting system supports families in the way its designers intended. The research may begin inside Duke’s laboratories and academic literature, but its consequences will be measured in the lives, relationships and financial independence Carefull is trying to protect.
