Birdai Labs Raises $4M Seed for Onchain Execution Infrastructure

Birdai Labs has raised a $4M seed round to build infrastructure for measuring, verifying, and improving how trades execute on high-performance blockchains. Castle Island Ventures led the round, with Metalayer Ventures and The Venture Dept. participating. The company announced the financing on July 28, 2026.

The capital matters, but the market-structure thesis is the more interesting signal. Birdai Labs is betting that onchain trading cannot mature on speed claims and settlement records alone because the gap between the price a trader expects and the price they receive is where invisible costs accumulate. Making that difference measurable could transform execution quality from a promise into infrastructure.

What Happened

Birdai Labs was founded in 2025 by Kevin Farrelly and Greg Scanlon, who self-funded the company's initial infrastructure before accepting outside capital. Kevin Farrelly CEO, while Greg Scanlon is CTO. The company is based in San Francisco and operates at the intersection of digital-asset market structure, distributed systems, and onchain data.

The seed proceeds will support senior engineering hires and expand Birdai's infrastructure at the base layer of the blockchain. That level matters because public settlement records show the outcome of a transaction, while base-layer data can reveal how transactions were timed, ordered, and propagated before the final execution. Birdai's stated goal is to measure those mechanics, verify execution quality, and help market participants recover value that would otherwise leak away.

Why Execution Quality Matters Onchain

Execution quality sounds abstract until a trader compares the expected price of an order with the actual result. The difference can include fees, market impact, and value captured through transaction ordering, all of which change the economics of a trade even when the transaction technically succeeds. Birdai uses a beta metric to describe and decompose that leakage, giving protocols and market participants a common framework for understanding what happened.

Traditional financial markets have spent decades building disclosure and accountability around order handling. The SEC's Rule 605 execution-quality framework requires covered market participants to publish standardized information that helps investors compare execution outcomes. Onchain markets are structurally different, and Birdai is not a regulatory equivalent, but the comparison illustrates a durable principle: mature markets eventually require measurement that participants can inspect and evaluate.

That need becomes more important as high-performance blockchains experiment with transaction-ordering models that distribute control among more proposers. Birdai argues that greater fragmentation can make ordering more competitive while also making execution more difficult to evaluate. Neutral infrastructure becomes increasingly valuable when no single venue, validator, or interface can provide the complete picture.

A Team Built Around Market Structure

Kevin Farrelly previously co-founded Random Forest Capital, a data-science investment firm that Franklin Templeton acquired in 2018. He later worked on Franklin Templeton's blockchain venture initiatives, giving Birdai a founder with experience spanning quantitative finance, institutional asset management, and digital assets. That background is particularly relevant for a company translating market-structure concepts into software institutions can evaluate.

Greg Scanlon complements that experience. Before Birdai, he worked as a senior quantitative trader at Citadel and later joined Franklin Templeton's blockchain venture organization, experience independently reflected in a Christie's speaker biography. James McClain, Birdai's Founding Quantitative Researcher, adds a Princeton PhD and quantitative hedge-fund experience to the team.

From Analytics to Infrastructure

Birdai Core, the company's free measurement layer, is live, and Birdai says its research is based on millions of decoded transactions. The platform serves traders, market makers, protocols, decentralized exchanges, and validators. Each group experiences execution quality differently, but all benefit when order quality can be measured against a shared record.

For traders, the value lies in understanding what an order actually cost. Market makers can compare execution quality across venues and identify harmful order flow. Protocols can examine which liquidity pools or routing decisions lose value, while validators can use transparent ordering metrics to distinguish healthier sequencing from extractive behavior. The result is an invisible market cost becoming something the ecosystem can analyze with evidence rather than assumptions.

The commercial opportunity remains difficult to evaluate. Birdai has not disclosed revenue, customer counts, valuation, named customers, or independently audited product metrics, and no earlier institutional financing was identified. The company-reported transaction dataset and live measurement platform demonstrate technical activity, but customer adoption remains an important milestone for investors and market participants to watch.

What the $4M Changes

The new capital gives Birdai room to recruit senior engineers and deepen the infrastructure required to analyze execution at the blockchain's base layer. That work is inherently difficult because the relevant information extends beyond the final transaction record. Timing, state changes, ordering, venue behavior, and participant incentives all have to be reconstructed before the result becomes a trustworthy benchmark.

The investor group also aligns with the company's mission. Castle Island Ventures focuses on financial-services and blockchain infrastructure, while Metalayer Ventures invests in blockchain-based financial systems. Their participation suggests the financing is less a bet on another trading interface than on the measurement layer that protocols, institutions, and market makers may ultimately require beneath one.

What This Signals

Crypto infrastructure has traditionally celebrated throughput because it is easy to measure and display. Execution quality is more demanding because it asks who received the expected price, who captured the difference, and whether the result can be reproduced. Birdai Labs is building for the point at which those questions become part of product selection, protocol governance, and institutional due diligence.

The $4M seed round will not determine whether Birdai becomes the standard it aims to build. It does provide the company with capital and investor support to turn a market-structure thesis into deeper engineering infrastructure. If onchain markets continue moving toward institutional adoption, the winning infrastructure may be the system that proves a trade was executed well, not merely the chain that confirms it executed quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Birdai Labs do?

Birdai Labs builds infrastructure that measures and verifies how trades execute on high-performance blockchains. It analyzes the gap between an expected price and the actual fill so traders, market makers, protocols, and validators can inspect execution quality.

Who invested in Birdai Labs’ $4M Seed round?

Castle Island Ventures led the round. Metalayer Ventures and The Venture Dept. also participated.

How will Birdai Labs use the seed funding?

Birdai Labs says it will hire senior engineers and extend its infrastructure at the base of the chain. The goal is to deepen its ability to measure, verify, and improve onchain execution.

Why does onchain execution quality matter?

A completed transaction does not reveal whether the trader received a strong price or lost value through fees, market impact, or ordering. Execution-quality measurement makes those costs easier to compare and verify.

What should operators and investors watch next?

The next proof point is commercial adoption, including which protocols, venues, traders, or market makers use Birdai’s data. Birdai has not publicly disclosed customers, revenue, valuation, or audited adoption metrics.
