Biota Seeks $3M Seed Round for Faster PFAS Testing

Biota, a Colorado environmental diagnostics startup developing faster PFAS testing tools, is seeking a $3M seed round. The financing is an active raise, not a completed round, according to the Colorado BioScience Association's 2026 investor conference listing.

The company is building two products around a costly weakness in PFAS cleanup: treatment decisions cannot move faster than the measurements behind them. PFAS RapidTest is designed for field screening, while MagnaPrep is intended to accelerate sample preparation inside environmental laboratories.

The broader signal extends beyond another WaterTech startup seeking venture capital. Biota is positioning measurement as infrastructure for the PFAS cleanup economy at the same moment regulators, utilities, testing laboratories, and remediation firms are under increasing pressure to generate more data and act on it more quickly.

What Biota Is Actually Raising

Biota is seeking a $3M seed round and is scheduled to present at the Rocky Mountain Life Sciences Investor and Partnering Conference in Vail from September 30 through October 2, 2026. That wording matters because the original intake headline stated that the company had raised $3M, while the conference listing explicitly says "Funding Sought: $3M Seed." The company has not disclosed that the round has closed.

The seed target follows an oversubscribed pre-seed round of undisclosed size, according to a University of Wisconsin profile of Founder and CEO Rose Nash, PhD. Antler and Mazarine Ventures publicly list Biota in their portfolios, while Nash has also identified Zymo Research, Unpopular Ventures, and Aerion Capital among the company's investors. The company has not identified a lead investor for the current seed round, a valuation, or total dilutive funding.

The funding picture is clearer when grants remain in the proper category. Colorado's Office of Economic Development and International Trade awarded Biota a $250,000 Advanced Industries grant in 2026 for a PFAS extraction system, and the Colorado BioScience Association lists a $305,000 NIEHS SBIR Phase I award among the company's recent milestones. Those awards support technical development and commercialization, but they are non-dilutive funding rather than evidence that the $3M seed round has closed.

Why PFAS Measurement Has Become Infrastructure

PFAS remediation receives most of the attention because removing persistent chemicals from water is the visible challenge. Measurement is the less visible layer that makes remediation possible. Utilities, environmental laboratories, engineering firms, and treatment providers all depend on reliable data before selecting equipment, verifying system performance, documenting compliance, or determining where contamination is entering a watershed.

The regulatory backdrop reinforces that need. The EPA's PFAS drinking water framework maintains enforceable limits of 4.0 parts per trillion for PFOA and PFOS while requiring public water systems to monitor and report results. In May 2026, the agency also announced nearly $1B to help states address PFAS in drinking water, directing additional resources toward testing and treatment infrastructure even as implementation timelines continue to evolve.

None of that guarantees Biota's success, but it explains why faster measurement matters. A treatment company waiting weeks for centralized laboratory results is not simply waiting for a report. It may also be delaying a pilot project, a purchasing decision, a treatment adjustment, or confirmation that remediation is working.

Biota's Two-Product Strategy

PFAS RapidTest is a field-compatible fluorescence screening system that Biota says can deliver quantitative results in approximately 15 minutes. The company positions it as a way for treatment and remediation teams to gather operational intelligence more quickly without routing every decision through a centralized laboratory. The official website still lists RapidTest as "Coming Soon," and no independent validation dataset was identified in the available sources.

MagnaPrep addresses the laboratory side of the workflow. Biota describes it as a magnetic nanoparticle-based PFAS concentration and sample-preparation system designed to replace conventional solid-phase extraction cartridges while increasing laboratory throughput. A second NIH SBIR Phase I award disclosed by Nash in July 2026 supports work on light-triggered PFAS release and automated magnetic handling, although the amount of that newer award has not been disclosed.

The distinction between screening and regulatory compliance remains important. The EPA identifies specific validated laboratory methods for PFAS compliance monitoring, and Biota's own materials state that regulated confirmatory analysis continues to belong in accredited laboratories. RapidTest is therefore best understood as a field decision-support tool, while MagnaPrep is intended to improve laboratory sample-preparation workflows.

From Temporary Lab Space to Longmont

Biota opened a 7,500-square-foot laboratory and innovation facility in Longmont in June 2026 after previously operating from temporary University of Colorado laboratory space. The company says the facility will support product development, validation, commercialization, hiring, and market expansion for its first two PFAS analytics products.

Nash leads a technical team that includes Dan Feldheim, PhD, Head of Chemistry; Tom Wieser, PhD, Lead Assay Scientist; Sydney Ciechanowicz, Analytical Chemist; and Andrew Garst, PhD. Biota's current materials do not identify a CTO, so assigning that title would go beyond the company's own disclosures.

The new facility provides a more credible operating foundation for the seed raise. A permanent laboratory does not demonstrate product-market fit, but it does move the company beyond the temporary-laboratory stage and creates additional capacity for validation, automation, and commercial readiness.

What the $3M Seed Thesis Needs to Prove

Biota's strongest investment argument is that PFAS testing is not a supporting activity in remediation. It is the control system. Faster field measurements can help teams determine what to test next, while higher-throughput sample preparation can enable laboratories to process more regulated confirmation work without rebuilding existing workflows.

The unanswered questions remain equally important. Investors still need independent performance data, commercial launch timelines, customer adoption, pricing, laboratory economics, and a clearer explanation of how the proposed $3M will be deployed. They also need evidence that Biota can turn a technically coherent product strategy into a repeatable commercial model across laboratories, remediation firms, utilities, and government customers.

That is the more meaningful funding story. Biota is not asking investors to believe PFAS is a problem; regulators and public investment have already established that reality. The company is asking investors to believe that the PFAS cleanup economy will pay for a faster measurement layer and that this team can become one of the companies trusted to build it.
