Square Nine Capital Invests in Beatport’s Next Chapter

Square Nine Capital is refinancing an existing Beatport credit facility and adding capital for continued investment across the company's platform, products, and wider creator ecosystem. The September 30, 2026 transaction brings a new private-credit partner into Beatport's capital structure alongside existing sponsor Axar Capital, but the parties did not disclose the amount, pricing, maturity, or valuation.

The financing arrives as Beatport moves into a new leadership chapter. Matt Gralen became CEO in July, Helen Sartory became President and COO, and longtime CEO Robb McDaniels moved to Executive Chairman after overseeing the company's post-bankruptcy turnaround.

Beatport began as a download store for DJs in 2004. Its commercial relevance now reaches beyond track sales into streaming integrations, DJ software, label services, producer tools, media, discovery, and events, all built around a professional music customer whose needs never fit neatly inside consumer streaming.

What Square Nine Capital Is Financing

Square Nine Capital's investment in Beatport has two disclosed components: it refinances an existing credit facility and provides additional capital for Beatport's strategic priorities. The release says the money will support investment across the platform, products, and broader ecosystem for DJs, producers, labels, and artists.

The terms leave important limits around the story. Square Nine, Beatport, and Axar did not disclose a transaction amount, interest rate, maturity, ownership percentage, valuation, or detailed allocation of the proceeds. That makes this a financing event, not a priced venture round or a reported change of control.

Square Nine describes itself as a private-credit investor focused on tailored debt solutions for middle-market companies. Its official strategy says the firm invests at or near the top of a company's capital structure and does not pursue control-equity investments, which fits the announced refinancing while leaving the exact Beatport instrument undisclosed.

Square Nine principals Christopher Brown and Griffin Coakley framed the deal as a partnership with Beatport management and Axar. Configure Partners served as Beatport's financial adviser, Reed Smith represented Beatport, and Paul Hastings represented Square Nine.

Why Beatport Still Matters to Working DJs

Beatport was founded in 2004 as a digital download store at the moment professional DJs were beginning to move away from vinyl but still lacked reliable legal access to performance-ready files. Historical co-founders Jonas Tempel, Eloy Lopez, and Bradley Roulier built the original service around that gap.

Downloads survived inside Beatport because the customer was doing more than passive listening. A working DJ may need to purchase, organize, edit, store, and load a high-quality file into performance software. Streaming added a new mode of access, but it did not remove the professional preference for control over the asset.

Beatport has used that relationship to expand into a portfolio of tools and services. The group now spans music discovery and sales, DJ streaming integrations, browser-based DJ software, distribution and rights management, demo submission, production software, samples, media, and live events through brands and services including Beatport DJ, AmpSuite, LabelRadar, Plugin Boutique, Beatportal, and International Music Summit.

The company reports 10M registered users, more than 80,000 labels, 400,000 artists, $400M paid to artists and labels since 2004, and a combined brand reach above 8M followers. Those are Beatport's own platform metrics, not independently audited financial results, but they show how far the business has moved beyond a narrow download storefront.

From SFX Bankruptcy to a New Capital Partner

Beatport's current capital story begins with the collapse of former parent SFX Entertainment. Axar Capital's account of the turnaround says it gained control through the 2016 bankruptcy process, helped install Robb McDaniels as CEO in 2017, and supported acquisitions and operating changes that rebuilt revenue and earnings.

Axar reported that Beatport exceeded $100M in revenue in 2025, more than double its 2018 level. Because that figure comes from the sponsor, it is best treated as company-side reporting rather than an audited public-company disclosure.

The latest financing adds Square Nine without erasing Axar's role. The announcement repeatedly describes Axar as the existing sponsor and Square Nine as a new capital partner, making the transaction a refinancing and growth-capital handoff rather than an acquisition.

The management handoff matters too. Matt Gralen became CEO on July 1, 2026, while Helen Sartory moved into the President and COO role and McDaniels became Executive Chairman. The company is financing its next operating plan only months after giving a new leadership team responsibility for delivering it.

The Electronic-Music Market Is Expanding

The IMS Electronic Music Business Report 2025/26 values the global electronic-music industry at $15.1B in 2025, up 7% year over year. The report measures recordings, publishing, digital services, festivals, clubs, creator tools, merchandise, sponsorship, and related revenue, so it describes a broader ecosystem than Beatport's addressable market alone.

The same report says Beatport revenue grew 9.4% in 2025, continuing annual growth of 5-10% since 2017. It also cites 49,000 active labels and 279,000 active artists on Beatport, a narrower active-participant definition than the broader lifetime/platform counts on the company's About page.

That context helps explain why a private-credit firm would see durable value in a specialized music platform. Beatport sits between creators, labels, professional DJs, software, discovery, and events, earning relevance from transactions and workflows that general consumer streaming services were not designed to own.

What the Financing Must Support

Square Nine's capital gives Beatport room to invest, but the announcement does not specify whether the first priority is library management, label analytics, streaming infrastructure, producer tools, international growth, events, or another product initiative. Current leadership has discussed core structural upgrades, better library management, stronger label tools, and bringing more people into DJing, yet the financing release does not allocate dollars to those plans.

The execution question is whether Beatport can deepen its professional utility without diluting the focus that made the business durable. Every adjacent service has to improve the economic relationship among DJs, artists, producers, and labels instead of merely adding another logo to the group.

Beatport's history suggests that professional behavior can preserve value after the consumer market moves on. Square Nine is now financing the next version of that argument, with the balance sheet, leadership team, and product portfolio all expected to work together before the DJ reaches for the next track.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of investment did Square Nine Capital make in Beatport?

The parties described the transaction as an investment that refinances an existing Beatport credit facility and provides additional capital. Square Nine is a private-credit firm, but the announcement did not disclose the amount, pricing, maturity, or complete instrument terms.

What will Beatport use the new capital for?

Beatport said the financing will support strategic priorities across its platform, products, and broader ecosystem for DJs, producers, labels, and artists. The company did not publish a product-by-product allocation.
