Aurelius Systems Raises $40M Series A for Laser Defense
Aurelius Systems has closed a $40M Series A to scale Archimedes, its autonomous directed-energy platform for counter-drone defense. Draper Associates and KAS Venture Partners co-led the financing, which the company announced on August 5, 2026.
The round puts fresh capital behind a problem that has turned into an economic trap for militaries: inexpensive drones can force defenders to spend far more on every interception. Aurelius is betting that reusable laser systems, domestic component production, and faster platform integration can change that equation, but the next test is manufacturing and delivery rather than another controlled demonstration.
The financing also marks a rapid step up for a company founded in 2024. Aurelius reported 19 employees and expects to grow beyond 40 by the end of 2026, making this Series A both a product bet and an organizational stress test.

Draper Associates and KAS Venture Partners co-led the $40M Series A. General Catalyst, Hanwha Defense USA, Outlander, Alumni Ventures, Bravo Victor Venture Capital, Detroit Venture Partners, and Decisive Point participated, along with other investors the company did not name.
Aurelius said the money will fund further technical development of Archimedes, expanded operations and production, vertical integration, better availability of critical components, stronger manufacturing resilience, faster customer delivery, broader platform offerings, and entry into new markets. Draper Partner Andy Tang framed the company’s progress around execution from technology validation to deployment partnerships, while KAS Partner Julian Handel emphasized the widening gap between the growth of autonomous threats and defenses that can stop them. Their firms are funding a scale-up phase where production discipline will matter as much as optical performance.
Archimedes Moves From Testing to Integration
Archimedes combines a high-power fiber laser, optical sensing, machine-learning targeting, and an autonomy stack in a compact counter-UAS platform. Aurelius says the system can draw from grid, generator, or battery power and is designed for both fixed installations and mobile platforms.
The company has accumulated a visible series of test and integration milestones. At T-REX 26-2, Aurelius reported that Archimedes engaged more than 20 quadcopters and more than 5 Army-supplied drones the system had not previously encountered. Aurelius also demonstrated command-and-control interoperability at Operation Jailbreak and won the Army’s first FUZE competition at AUSA in 2025.
In July 2026, Aurelius and American Rheinmetall announced an integration partnership to place Archimedes on robotic combat vehicles. That relationship shifts the conversation from a standalone laser turret to a component of mobile, autonomous force protection, where power, mobility, command systems, and mission software have to work together.
Manufacturing Is the Real Series A Story
Aurelius is not using the round only to make Archimedes more capable. In April 2026, the company opened a U.S. manufacturing division for high-power fiber-laser source modules and related components, arguing that the domestic supply base is too limited for the expected demand from defense and industrial customers.
Vertical integration can reduce dependence on foreign allocation schedules, improve traceability, and shorten the feedback loop between system design and component production. It can also create a second set of execution risks because producing laser sources at volume is a different operational discipline from assembling a prototype weapon system. The Series A gives Aurelius more control over that dependency, but capital cannot substitute for yield, quality, reliability, or delivery performance.
This is why the employee target deserves attention. Growing from 19 people to more than 40 by year-end would add engineering and manufacturing capacity, but it also requires Aurelius to build the operating systems that keep hardware teams from tripping over their own speed.
