Antares Raises $470M Series C for Military Nuclear Microreactors

Antares has raised $470M in Series C financing to move its factory-produced nuclear microreactors from demonstrated reactor physics toward field deployment. Announced on July 27, 2026, the round is intended to advance nuclear systems for defense missions.

The Series C includes $370M in equity and $100M in debt. Paradigm and Caffeinated Capital co-led the financing, with Point72 Ventures, Shine Capital, Industrious Ventures, and other investors participating.

The timing matters because the capital follows a genuine technical milestone. On June 4, Antares' Mark-0 became the first privately developed non-light-water reactor in the United States to achieve criticality in more than four decades, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. The next challenge is harder: turn that proof into an electricity-producing system in 2027, then prepare reactors for defense customers in 2028.

What Happened

Antares says the Series C will support the transition from its Mark-0 demonstration to Mark-1, a full-power reactor targeted to produce electricity in 2027. The company then plans its first deployments at U.S. military installations beginning in 2028, including work connected to the Department of the Air Force.

The financing extends a rapid capital progression for a company founded in 2023 by Jordan Bramble, CEO, and Julia DeWahl, President. Antares announced an $8M seed round in 2023, a $30M Series A in 2024, and a $96M Series B in 2025. Those named rounds total at least $604M, although Antares has not published a single cumulative funding figure following the Series C.

Repeat investors matter here. Caffeinated Capital has backed Antares through multiple rounds, while Shine Capital and Industrious Ventures also participated before the Series C. That continuity gives the latest financing a different character than a one-time bet on a fashionable category.

From Criticality to Electricity

Criticality sounds like the finish line because nuclear terminology was apparently designed to make every milestone sound final. It is not. The Mark-0 test was a zero-power fueled demonstration at Idaho National Laboratory that validated reactor physics, reactivity controls, and instrumentation, but it did not produce electricity.

That distinction sits at the center of Antares' roadmap. Mark-0 demonstrated that the reactor core could sustain a controlled chain reaction and generated data for future designs. Mark-1 must integrate the heat-transfer, power-conversion, safety, operating, and maintenance systems required to turn that physics into usable power.

Antares says its R1 microreactor is designed to deliver between 100 kWe and 1 MWe for more than six years between refueling. The design uses TRISO fuel in a graphite core, sodium heat pipes for passive heat transfer, and a closed nitrogen Brayton cycle for power conversion. Those specifications remain company targets until demonstrated in a full-power operating configuration.

Why Military Power Is the First Market

Antares is not beginning with a promise to beat every power plant on price. It is starting where reliable, transportable energy has strategic value and where losing access to the grid becomes a mission problem. Remote bases, defense systems, space operations, and other constrained environments create a stronger first market than general electricity demand.

The Department of the Air Force paired Antares with Joint Base San Antonio as a potential microreactor site under the Advanced Nuclear Power for Installations initiative. Siting and environmental analyses still lie ahead, so the pairing represents a development pathway rather than a completed deployment.

Federal policy adds urgency without removing the engineering challenges. Executive Order 14299 directs the Department of Defense, through the Army, to begin operating a reactor at a domestic military installation by September 30, 2028. The order creates demand and institutional momentum, but it does not guarantee that Antares will supply that reactor.

The Capital Stack Shows What Comes Next

The $370M equity component gives Antares room to continue funding technical development and organizational growth. The $100M debt component signals that the company is financing a hardware business with equipment, fuel, facilities, and repeat manufacturing requirements. Nuclear startups eventually have to move beyond presentation decks and into the realities of the physical supply chain.

That is where this financing becomes more than another venture capital headline. Antares now needs to qualify subsystems, complete safety and licensing work, establish repeatable production, and operate a full-power system under conditions that resemble the field. Capital can fund those steps, but it cannot execute them.

For investors, the Mark-0 milestone changes the evidence. Paradigm, Caffeinated Capital, Point72 Ventures, Shine Capital, and Industrious Ventures are backing a company that can point to a fueled-reactor demonstration, a government-supported testing pathway, and an identified defense deployment program. The remaining question is no longer whether Antares can build a reactor. It is whether the company can build the next reactor, generate electricity, and repeat the process safely and reliably.

What This Signals for Advanced Nuclear

Advanced nuclear has spent years carrying two reputations at once: enormous strategic potential and timelines that can punish optimism. Antares is trying to narrow that gap through smaller systems, factory production, and a sequence of demonstrations tied to specific federal customers. The Series C reflects investor conviction that the company has earned a larger balance sheet to pursue that plan.

The broader signal is not that every microreactor developer is suddenly de-risked. It is that capital is beginning to distinguish between reactor concepts and companies that have crossed a fueled-hardware milestone. That distinction matters in a sector where physical proof is expensive, regulation is unavoidable, and schedule credibility can disappear one missed milestone at a time.

Antares still has plenty to prove. Mark-1 must produce electricity, the company must navigate licensing and environmental review, and future deployments must operate safely for years rather than for the duration of a single test campaign. The next 24 months should reveal whether the Series C financed a credible industrial transition or simply expanded the ambition.

What to Watch

The first checkpoint is Mark-1 in 2027. Investors, customers, and regulators will be watching for full-power electrical output, subsystem performance, safe operating procedures, and evidence that the design can move from one successful demonstration to a repeatable product.

The second checkpoint is deployment readiness in 2028. That includes site selection, licensing, fuel availability, manufacturing cadence, installation logistics, and customer acceptance. Antares has raised enough capital to confront those questions at industrial scale. The company now has to answer them with hardware.
