ABB Invests in LevelTen Energy for Clean Power Deals

ABB has made an undisclosed minority investment in LevelTen Energy through ABB Electrification Ventures, pairing the transaction with a strategic partnership focused on clean-energy procurement. The deal connects ABB's electrification, energy-management, and advisory capabilities with LevelTen's marketplaces, data, transaction tools, and portfolio-management software.

The financial terms are not the important signal because they were not disclosed. What matters is the capability ABB is buying into: a transaction layer that helps industrial and commercial customers find, evaluate, contract, and manage clean power after they have already invested in the equipment that uses it.

What Happened

ABB announced the minority investment and partnership on August 6, 2026. The investment comes from ABB Electrification Ventures, the venture-capital arm of ABB's Electrification business, and no amount, valuation, ownership percentage, security type, or named round was disclosed. That makes this a strategic investment, not a conventional funding announcement with a tidy price tag and a victory lap attached.

The companies plan to combine ABB's expertise in electrification, digital systems, energy management, storage, microgrids, and energy-and-carbon advisory services with LevelTen's clean-energy transaction infrastructure. ABB says the partnership will help customers secure long-term clean power, capacity, and portfolio-management tools while moving from planning and implementation into optimization and reporting.

LevelTen founder and CEO Bryce Smith described the relationship as a way for ABB's global customers to access clean power, capacity, and portfolio-management tools more easily. Stuart Thompson, President of ABB's Electrification Service division, framed LevelTen as the missing procurement capability in an advisory offering built to help customers manage costs, reliability, and decarbonization at the same time.

Why This Matters

Corporate energy strategy has become a systems problem. A manufacturer can install efficient motors, intelligent controls, battery storage, microgrids, and sophisticated energy-management software, then discover that sourcing clean electricity at scale still requires specialized market data, contracting expertise, risk analysis, and portfolio administration. The equipment can optimize what happens inside a facility, but it cannot make a power purchase agreement negotiate itself.

LevelTen fills that gap by turning clean-energy procurement into transaction infrastructure. Its platform supports power purchase agreements, capacity, storage, powered land, environmental attribute certificates, granular certificates, market intelligence, and performance monitoring. The partnership gives ABB a way to connect those market-facing functions to its physical and digital energy stack instead of leaving customers to assemble the pieces through separate vendors and advisory teams.

The integration becomes more important as large power users face tighter grids, more volatile prices, and higher expectations around when and where clean energy is generated. Annual renewable matching is giving way to more detailed procurement and reporting requirements, while data centers and industrial facilities demand capacity on timelines that traditional planning processes struggle to meet.

How LevelTen Built Its Leverage

LevelTen was founded in 2016 to reduce friction in clean-energy transactions. The company launched its Energy Marketplace in 2018 and expanded into asset transactions, tax credits, market data, performance monitoring, capacity, storage, and granular certificates. Its current platform is designed to help buyers, sellers, advisors, developers, and financiers compare opportunities and move through deals with more standardized data and workflows.

The scale is company-reported but substantial. ABB says LevelTen has facilitated more than 20 GW of clean-energy transactions in more than 35 markets across North America and Europe. In its 2025 annual review, LevelTen reported 5.4 GW of clean-energy deals during the year and a network of more than 1,300 project developers in 35 countries.

The investment follows a long funding history rather than replacing it. LevelTen raised a $20.5M Series B in 2019, a $35M Series C in 2021, and approximately $65M in Series D financing in 2024. The company said after the Series D that it had raised more than $125M since inception, but the undisclosed ABB investment cannot responsibly be added to that figure.

What ABB Gets

ABB gets a procurement capability that would be difficult to reproduce by simply adding another software module. LevelTen's value comes from the combination of marketplace participation, transaction data, workflows, analytics, and relationships across buyers and developers. That network gives ABB another way to support customers that need clean power and capacity, not just equipment and advice.

ABB also gains access to a broader project ecosystem that may create opportunities for monitoring, optimization, storage, microgrid, and lifecycle services. LevelTen, in return, gets deeper industrial expertise, global customer relationships, and a route into markets where ABB already has commercial reach, including Asia-Pacific.

The expected benefits are still forward-looking. Neither company announced named customer deployments, revenue commitments, a joint-product launch date, or geographic milestones, so the partnership should be judged by what reaches customers rather than what fits neatly into announcement language.

What This Signals

The transaction shows how strategic investors can buy into a missing layer of the value chain without acquiring the whole company or trying to rebuild a marketplace internally. ABB already helps customers plan, electrify, automate, and optimize operations. LevelTen adds the ability to transact for the power, capacity, and environmental attributes that make those systems useful within a broader decarbonization strategy.

For operators, the takeaway is that procurement, controls, storage, reporting, and risk management can no longer live as separate projects with separate owners. Companies that connect those decisions will have more influence over enterprise energy strategy than vendors offering isolated products, even when those products are technically strong.

For investors, the unknown check size should not obscure the strategic logic. ABB is placing capital behind a capability gap in its own customer offering, while LevelTen is pairing software and market liquidity with an industrial distribution channel. The next meaningful proof point will be whether that combination produces faster clean-power transactions, measurable customer outcomes, and durable expansion beyond the existing LevelTen marketplace.
